The first thing that strikes you about 'The Long walk' is the quality of the photographs of the island, reproduced on heavy quality glossy paper throughout the book. From coastal beach scenes, to wide sweeping mountain-scapes, the photos are amazing and capture the beauty of place.
The photos fill most of the pages cover to cover, and they are clearly intended to inspire you, which they do. You will probably need some inspiration to encourage you to complete the 75 mile pilgrimage across the island as described, which the author describes in detail as he walks it over the course 8 days. The book gives a little advice on breaking the walk down into smaller sections, though this is a large enough undertaking for those unfamiliar with long distance paths. The author is no stranger to long distance routes, and inspiring books about them. He spent nearly two years planning, walking and re-walking the route and island generally, and his efforts have clearly paid off, the photography shows the beauty of the island in all seasons. I would have probably have liked more maps and route guidance than is included and just the overview map, though the ordnance survey maps required are listed. Suffice it to say I have not yet walked the route, though I hope to one day.
