Book Description

2 Jan 2014

This is the story of how, over a period of one hundred and ninety-two days, I was torn away from the life I knew and loved, and dragged down to the depths of despair; of how I endured enforced isolation and near-starvation at the hands of Somali pirates; and of how I made a choice to survive by any and all means that I could muster.

In September 2011 Judith Tebbutt and her husband David set out on an adventurous holiday to Kenya. A couple for thirty-three years, they had first met in Zambia: Africa had played a major part in their life together. After a joyous week on safari in the Masai Mara, they flew on to a beach resort forty kilometres south of Somalia. And there, in the early hours of 11 September, tragedy struck them.

Judith was torn away from David by a band of armed pirates, dragged over sea and land to a village in the arid heart of lawless Somalia, and there held hostage in a squalid room, a ransom on her head. There, too, she learned the terrible truth that the responsibility of securing her release now rested with her son Ollie.

Powerful, moving and at times quite devastating, this is Judith Tebbutt's story in her own words.

Review

Judith Tebbutt's story is inspiring, and leaves you with the feeling that if this woman could show such fortitude, then so might we all ... Her story of terror, despair and survival is as gripping as any thriller, yet told sparely, with no self-pity. It is a testament to the resilience of the individual spirit, but also the the strength of family love ... Vivid and detailed enough to place you firmly in the showed of this extraordinary woman ... A book which is a passionate affirmation of life. (Daily Mail)

A detailed, touching account, revealing not just how she coped but also her tenderness for her husband. (Colin Freeman Daily Telegraph 2013-07-13)

Judith Tebbutt's book about being kidnapped and held to ransom is a wonderfully restrained story of survival against adversity and grief. (Libby Purves The Times)

A riveting tale of human fortitude ... A Long Walk Home is an extraordinary tale. Not only is it an action-packed account of a kidnapping and hostage situation, it is also the story of how the author triumphed psychologically against terror, semi-starvation and isolation ...The result is a page-turner in which the action moves at a pace ... Fast-paced though the action is, it is the psychological story that compels. (Sian Griffiths Sunday Times 2013-07-14)

This powerful book captures the urgency of telling even the darkest of stories, and evokes the power of resilience in adversity ... A book that begins with a horrific death becomes a clarion call to cherish whatever we might have left of life.' (Anita Sethi Observer)

A keenly vivid memoir. (Craig Brown Mail on Sunday) --This text refers to the Hardcover edition.

5.0 out of 5 stars A beautifully told inspiring story 11 July 2013

I remember watching the news and hearing about the murder of David Tebbutt and kidnap of his wife Judith. The news item gave her age, latish fifties and said that she was partially deaf and her hearing aid had not been taken with her. I was shocked and horrified and could not imagine how this poor woman could manage in these dreadful circumstances. I have been absolutely knocked out therefore by this book which shows the strength of character and the determination and intelligence that she brought to this dire situation.
This is a very, very inspirational account of how Judith Tebbutt coped. How she set herself a routine, took every opportunity to exercise both her body and her brain and used her experience to build a connection with the individuals who held her captive. The book is also a wonderful tribute to Mrs Tebbutt's son Ollie who, while only in his twenties, dealt with negotiations for her release with maturity and sensitivity.
I was disappointed to find the odd typo and gap in the middle of a word in the kindle edition. Faber and Faber, the publishers, were David Tebbutt's employers and I should have expected them to take extra care in the edit for this important story.
A wonderful and inspirational read which I highly recommend.

Really good read right from the first page. Recommended to me by a friend, otherwise it may not have been a book I would have chosen myself, but really glad I did.

I remember seeing the press regarding this awful kidnap and wondering what it must have been like to not only be kidnapped but also lose your partner at the same time. Judith's detailed account is told in a very open, descriptive and honest way with emotion but with no overt sense of self-pity. Her courage, strength and mental determination comes through very clearly in her writing leaving the reader not only somewhat in awe of her mind at the time but also making you wonder if it was a fiction novel you were reading. And not in a bad way. For one human to experience such terror but remain so mindful is testament to the human spirit.
