The plot is not new; the characters are not particularly fresh but that having been said, the treatment is good overall and most importantly you get dragged into turning over the next page. Even if some passages descend into -- almost - a parody of a bodice-ripper (sort of "she could feel his eyes boring into her soul" type stuff, which is most unlike Mr Rhinehart!)it's worth an idle hour or two, although real-world politics have overtaken the premise on which the plot is based. But compare and contrast with Nevil Shute's "On the Beach", written twenty years earlier when the Cold war was at its height if you want a truly chilling read about Armageddon.

If you're expecting this book to be as thought-provoking, funny, and innivotive as The Dice Man, then you may well be dissapointed. That's not to say its not a good book; it is, a very good book, but its more similar in tone and content to John Wyndhams disaster/survivor books (e.g., Karaken Awakes or Day of the Triffids) than to Rhineharts other work. One aspect clearly binds this novel to the authors other fictions (or semi-fictions), however: the abundant inclusion of literary porn. Hey, I'm not saying that's wrong, I'm not saying its impairing, and I'm not even saying it's excessive, it's just most definately there - be warned and informed!

Using the topic of sailing away from a nuclear war, Luke Rhinehart creates a moving yarn of radiation clouds, near escapes, refugees centers, pirates, famine, plague, and survival. Insights into life in the Caribbean and South America after the war are prophetic.

This is a fantastic book. I found it by chance in a second hand shop, recognised the name from The Dice Man so I gave it a go .. it was superb. If you can find it, read it...
