Elizabeth Jane Howard's "The Long View", was first published in 1956 and caused a stir in polite London society. Marriage was a revered institution previously not analysed in such a contemporary and forthright style. Written in five parts, each introduced by the date of a year, in reverse chronological order; 1950, 1942, 1937, 1927 and 1926, it chronicles the marriage of an English couple in Britain and France.
The novel pulled me straight into the complex lives of its characters, so much so that I felt that knew them like I know my family and best friends. The detection required combined with the intermingled descriptions of period domestic everyday life was fascinating, so much so that I found myself finishing it within three days!
I recommend it as one her most engrossing books!
