Product Description

I spent 25 years taking a look at life from the ocean depths through the mask of a scuba diver. I logged over 1,000 dives on over 80 trips to 14 countries.

This is a story of a voyage that took me under the sea where I waged war with my demons and learned a different truth about mankind. It recounts my experiences and compares the differences and similarities of Planet Ocean and Planet Earth. And it shares wisdom given to me by Planet Ocean.

At the time, my experiences felt like disconnected pieces on a meandering path having no place to go. My wanderlust appeared meaningless. When I put it all together I discovered a carefully laid-out plan to become purposeful and whole.

In my stories you will come face-to-face with my dreams, fantasies, adventures, misadventures, failures, and the demons I invited to dinner. The experiences I relate reveal a deeper meaning in relationships and events as well as those seemingly innocuous happenstances in life.

In writing the stories I discovered myself – the one I need to know as I grow old and begin the search for purposefulness and worth in a world that will have left me behind.

A wonderful surprise 14 Feb 2011
By Christine - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
A friend recommended this book, and I'm so glad I listened. I have never scuba dived nor ever will, but this book allowed me to vicariously have that experience with all of the adventure and none of the risk. Mr. Deming is a wonderfully creative writer and I found myself admiring the original similes and metaphors that he weaves into his writing. More than that, I began copying out some profound observations that he made about life which rang especially true.
Since the book is divided into various dive experiences, I was able to pick it up and lay it down leisurely reading as I had the time. I have already lent my copy to a friend who does scuba dive. I feel like I have a better understanding
of what she has experienced.

Less scuba stories than expected, but a nice read 16 Mar 2008
By The Dylaness - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
I purchased this book expecting it to mostly center around scuba diving- instead, diving seems to be a little less prominent than I'd hoped and it's almost more of a biopic of the author's life, with some diving stories thrown in there too. I would not recommend this book for younger children as there are a few stories with mild sexual overtones. A nice read, but the stories are in a non-chronological order which make it very difficult to really keep up with the various characters (and especially lovers) in the writer's life.
He puts why divers dive into words beautifully 19 July 2011
By Seahorse Diver - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
A chance meeting of the author is the reason I came to read this book. Being a very avid diver, by the title I expected diving stories and got that, but did not expect how well Mr. Denning has done in writing and expressing some of the thoughts and impressions I feel about the sea and diving. And some of the nagging thoughts and insights that float through my head that diving triggers. There is something about diving and the travel that goes with it that keeps you grounded and centered. Get off center, go diving and get the perspective back. Mr. Denning has put into words what it feels like to be an interloper to a world you only artificially can visit and in a very clumsy way. Beautiful use of the language throughout the book to provoke thoughts and challenge you to answer, with many things you probably thought about as a diver but never could quite figure out the words to use to describe those feelings.

This is an excellent book to pass along to your non-diving spouse, family and friends to help them understand why we dive. It would also be a special book for any diver who has lost a loved one as the author has. Part of the journey through his dive logs is his own struggle to overcome the loss of his first wife and heal himself with diving being his number one therapist. It delves into his other loves that happened after her death so there are some romantic tones to the book, but that is by no means the focus of the book.

This is a quick read, but you will find yourself marking quotes to re-read or pass on to a friend at a later time.
