Gallon Drunk. There was a time when they had great influence. I was orginally going to write a review of "From the Heart of Town" for this, though it's somehow lost.. but certainly not forgotten. "In the Long Still Night" is a whole another experience. It doesn't have the dissonance of "Jake on the Make," the variety of instruments that makes "Keep Moving On" so surreal, though functions on its own merits.
In a way, this album has a more focused vision of a proper long play, as opposed to a collection of good songs, that so many people mistakenly think makes for a "classic" whatever. "Two Clear Eyes" is what James Johnston wishes he had on Christmas morning with the parents and family (parents appreciate sobriety on sacred days), but the tune's a wonderful kick start to one aggresive surge of drive and male angst. It reeks of blood, sex and violence, and at times James Brown. "Up on Fire" has perfect harmonica embroidery at its end, and the instrumentals "The Big Payoff" and "Get Ready ..." have Johnston and Terry Edwards dueling Springsteen/Clemmons style. It's exciting to watch these musicians work off one another, and that's what separates "In the Long Still Night" from its predecessor: more of a band effort than a one man vision, with the last one is rumored to be more of songwriters project. I find it to be highly underrated, and I think you would as well.
If you have a highway system that runs through London, where you can drive at top speed, this is one to have on hand.

Just picked this one up on Amazon this week. Had this album years ago when it was released, but seem to have mislyed it along the years. So happy to have this album back in my life. Cannot seem to find it on Spotify, Deezer of iTunes - a huge over site on their part.
This is by far the best Gallon Drunk album - they where round long before The Jim Jones Revue, and have been vastly overlooked.
Best tracks on the album are the title track In The Long Still Night. It's worth getting for the blinding version of To Love Somebody, the immediacy of James Johnsons voice on this track is incredible.

If you love music just buy this album.
