Product Description

Product Description
This is an exploration of the origins, symptoms and meanings of young peoples' suicidal crises. With an increasing number of people under 25 commiting suicide, this book looks at who the casualties are and considers why proportionately more young men than women resort to suicide. It combines accounts from bereaved relatives and young attempters with the evidence of research into the subject to make explicit the need for sensitive responses and improved understanding if current rates of youth suicide are to be curbed.

5.0 out of 5 stars would you care to dance?, 8 Jan 2003
By A Customer
I picked up this book, in the hope that i might be able to draw on its' author's research, and throw a few statistics at colleagues, in my quest for more tolerance of para-suicide victims on their journey through the accident and emergency department in which i was working.
What i found was a compelling mix of narrative, interviews with bereft relatives, and accounts from people who had been in a terribly desperate situation. I began to see for the first time in my career that not only was i right to see past the stigma of depression and suicide, but that worrying trends were becoming apparent in the age, gender and class of those who felt the need to end their lives; as compared with the last 50-100 years.
This book also chronicles the long overdue changes in the law, although not the attitudes, that govern our society and the way that suicide is perceived by those that it leaves behind.
THE LONG SLEEP is an eye-opener and a must read for anyone who works with young people, mental health, counselling, A&E; but most of all; anyone who wishes to understand the loneliness that can drive someone to want to die at a time in their life, when they should be dancing for joy.
