Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

There can barely be an Eagles fan on the face of the planet, after waiting patiently for the best part of 30 years--ignoring the piecemeal (and some might say mean-spirited) sprinkle of new songs on 1994’s Hell Freezes Over--that doesn’t crave every last minute of this epic stack of original work. But then there also hasn’t been a double album in history that couldn’t have been improved by shedding at least some of its load and tucking its jeans into its cowboy boots. Long Road out of Eden is no exception to that rule. Much of the first disc passes by in a shuffle of fairly standard, although admittedly enjoyable, mid-beat country-rock (see especially "Busy Being Fabulous") and the appearance of a drum machine on the second hints at a frankly unnecessary dalliance with 80s MOR pop--and one they’d already avoided by splitting the first time around. It’s music made by professionals, but lacking the classic, cinematic poise that has made Hotel California a mainstay on the best albums of all-time lists. But then the ambitious reach of the wind-swept, politically charged 10-minute title track really pulls things back, while the pleasant calypso drift of "It’s Your World Now", near a cappella melody waterfall of "No More Walks in the Wood" and moody blues swagger of "Somebody" prove there’s still just enough wind beneath these wings. --James Berry

BBC Review

This is proving to be a big year for elder statesmen of yankee 'Legacy Rock'. With the Boss and Old Neil back on form, here comes the real West Coast contingency; also fired up about war in the Middle East and reflecting on the ageing process in fine style. The difference of course is that Bruce and Shakey have been churning out work on a regular annual basis throughout the 21st century, whereas it took Henley, Frey, Schmit and Walsh a whole SIX years in the studio to get this double album on the shelves. Luckily it's all been just about worth it!

While to many the Eagles - and their reputation of a somewhat hedonistic heyday - represent all that went wrong with the Californian dream, it's also undeniable that not only were these guys players of the highest calibre, they also were not bad at critiquing their own peer group: sniping at coke-fuelled egos from the heart of the white powder maelstrom. Both strengths seem utterly undiminished. Walsh's guitar stings like a bee, and you'd be hard-pushed to date this as an album that comes a full 28 years after their last studio effort were it not for its subject matter.

The title track - a ten-minute centrepiece - is the key text here. A doomy, weary drag through Bush's Iraq, painting an impressionistic portrait of homesick soldiers lost in the desert and blind to the region's historical significance, while their commanders try to keep the spirit of the States alive with barbeques and pecan pie: 'bloated with entitlement, loaded on propaganda'. It's their "Hotel California" for the new age; a surreal nightmare of excess in foreign parts. It's also beautifully rounded off by a short guitar instrumental called "I Dreamed There Was No War". Point taken.

But Long Road! is no miserable trudge through worthy protest songs, it's also a (predictably) sleek vehicle for all the things Eagles fans love. Even without the sleevenotes you'll have fun spotting the cynical digs of Don Henley ("Frail Grasp On The Big Picture" is a brutally dark look at the ignorance of Middle America when it comes to politics and culture beyond the back yard), the gonzoid wonkiness of Joe Walsh ("Guilty Of The Crime" and the hilarious ode to growing up and staying in, "The Last Good Time In Town") and the sensitive, country-tinged tracks owned by Glenn Frey ("No More Cloudy Days" and the companion to "Tequila Sunrise" that is the mariachi-flavoured "It's Your World Now" ). "Center Of the Universe" may be one of the best things they've EVER done and for real fans there's also a bona fide treat with the J D Souther-penned "How Long" which dates from their early 70s repertoire.

Brimming with lush harmonising that still epitomises the partyed-out mellowness of the Sunshine State (cf: the opening eco-lament "No More Walks In The Wood"), Long Road! is far better than it deserves to be. Only the falsetto funk of "Fast Company" resorts to TOO many automotive metaphors. It's a pale shadow of "Life In The Fast Lane'. But overall this is an album played with verve, filled with lyrical incisiveness and still retaining the warm smell of colitas, whatever they are... --Chris Jones

When you think of the Eagles, you think of classic rock, you think of the open highway, and of course you think about 'Hotel California'. Add to these thoughts, 120 million album sales worldwide, four #1 U.S. singles and four Grammy Awards. These guys really are the stuff legends are made of.
Returning to the airwaves with their first full studio album in 28 years, Glen, Don, Joe and Timothy are offering their fans a taste of refreshing experimentation. While the group continue to belt out records full of emotion, with a power ballad-esque edge, they also take the opportunity to play with instruments and subject matters that they perhaps wouldn't have done before.
Other than greatest hits collections, the history of 2-disc sets has never been that solid - due mainly to the spreading of the album's better cuts amongst a mass of fillers. But with `Long Road Out Of Eden' there's no trouble of this happening. It's a solid effort from start to finish.
While disc one offers some atmospherically supple tracks with delicate instrumentation, it is in fact disc two that will hit the heads and hearts of Eagles fans everywhere. The album's title track offers a ten minute journey through some tantalizing woodwind and guitar playing, merged with an Arabic backdrop. Still on a softly -tinged tip, `Center Of The Universe' is a relaxing answer to a hard day at the office. Light vocals combined with some on-point production make the track a definite `one to watch'.
On the opening disc, tracks like `No More Walks In The Wood' and `I Don't Want To Hear Any More' continue to walk the same path as the other lightly-baked Eagles songs, but it's the upbeat energy heard on `Fast Company' and `Guilty Of The Crime' that lift the tempo of the album for a moment. With no reason to use the skip button, disc one is a good representation of where the Eagles and rock music in general should be.
While some of it sounds country and other parts play with the contemporary rock sound, `Long Road Out Of Eden' is a slice of good old fashion rock designed to get you up, lay you down and most certainly rekindle your love of feel-good music.

It's interesting reading all these other reviews, which tend to be either very positive or very negative. How anyone can possibly be the slightest bit disappointed with Long Road Out Of Eden is beyond me. To me this is one of their strongest releases and damn impressive. Some complain about its length, and that some of these songs shouldn't have been included, but apart from the cover of the dull Guilty Of The Crime I certainly do not agree. Others complain that some of the ballads are too soft and sentimental, but that was always a part of the Eagles sound (The Best Of My Love, I Can't Tell You Why, etc.), so - again! - I don't agree. I wouldn't want to be without Do Something (excellent), You Are Not Alone (very pretty melody) or I Don't Want To Hear Any More. The folk ballad Center Of The Universe gives me goosebumps - I think it is by far their most beautiful ballad alongside After The Thrill Is Gone (1975). The title track is another favourite: The guitar solo puts a lump in my throat and reminds you why these guys are still up there with the very best in the music business. I could go on and on about these songs (Waiting In The Weeds, Frail Grasp On The Big Picture, Business As Usual, etc.) - they really are THAT good. If, like me, you were very apprehensive about Long Road Out Of Eden based on the four, very bland, new songs they recorded for Hell Freezes Over, then do NOT worry. The Eagles are BACK, and they are OUTSTANDING. Every time I am listening to Long Road Out Of Eden in one sitting, by the time I get to the end of it, I am thoroughly impressed and really rather overwhelmed and touched by the fact that they have managed to make such a superior comeback after all these years. Higly recommended!

The Wait Is Over 12 Oct 2007
Format:Audio CD
So,28 years, has it been worth the wait? Most definately yes.In their first return to the studio since 1979's the 'The Long Run',Don Henley,Glenn Frey,Joe Walsh & Timothy B. Schmit deliver an album that is epic in both it's scope & ambition.Across 21 tracks all the things that I loved about them are here.
From the classic accapella harmonies of the opener 'No More Walks In The Wood' to Joe Walsh's blistering guitar solo on the 10 minute title track you realise that it's the contributions of the four individuals that make them the band that they are.
Highlights are numerous - the aforementioned 'Long Road Out Of Eden' (which wouldn't have sounded out of place on Don Henley's last solo album 'Inside Job),'Lately (Last Good Time In Town) which is a showcase for Joe Walsh & grooves like Steely Dan, to the classic vocal interplay between Don & Glenn on 'How Long'.Not to be overshadowed Timothy B.Schmit delivers a gorgeous vocal on 'I Don't Want To Hear It Anymore.
Welcome back guys
