Product Description

"Great fun and daft as monkeys" — Stuart MacBride, #1 bestselling author of BIRTHDAYS FOR THE DEAD

Barney Thomson — awkward, diffident, Glasgow barber — lives a life of desperate mediocrity. Shunned at work and at home, unable to break out of a twenty-year rut, each dull day blends seamlessly into the next.

However, there is no life so tedious that it cannot be spiced up by inadvertent murder, a deranged psychopath, and a freezer full of neatly packaged meat.

Barney Thomson's uninteresting life is about to go from 0 to 60 in five seconds, as he enters the grotesque and comically absurd world of the serial killer…

Praise for Douglas Lindsay:

"The plot, Russian literature fans, is a modern spin on Dostoyevsky’s Crime and Punishment. The bloody ending, movie buffs, is pure Reservoir Dogs." – The Mirror

"This is pitch-black comedy spun from the finest writing. Fantastic plot, unforgettable scenes and plenty of twisted belly laughs." – New Woman

"This chilling black comedy unfolds at dizzying speed...an impressive debut novel." – Sunday Mirror

"Gleefully macabre, hugely enjoyable black burlesque." – The Scotsman

THE BARNEY THOMSON novels in order:

#1 THE LONG MIDNIGHT OF BARNEY THOMSON
#2 THE BARBER SURGEON'S HAIRSHIRT
#3 MURDERERS ANONYMOUS
#4 THE RESURRECTION OF BARNEY THOMSON
#5 THE LAST FISH SUPPER
#6 THE HAUNTING OF BARNEY THOMSON
#7 THE FINAL CUT

These seven novels can be bought together as a set. Search for THE BARBERSHOP SEVEN.

Also look for THE END OF DAYS, a standalone Barney Thomson novella that can be enjoyed at any point in the sequence.

About the author:

5.0 out of 5 stars Very dark and very funny. 27 April 2011
By S. Horrigan TOP 100 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
Barney Thomson is a barber. Relegated to the chair furthest from the window he is generally ignored by customers who all seem to want one of the other two barbers in the shop to cut their hair.

Incapable of the usual inane and meaningless conversation that barbers everywhere are famed for, ignored by his wife who prefers to watch bad soap operas to talking to him and dominated by his slightly senile 85 year old mother, Barney really is one of the least interesting people in the world. That is until his two fellow barbers go missing and his mother dies all in the space of one week.

Meanwhile the police are hunting a serial killer who has been sending random body parts to the families of the victims from all over Scotland. Could Barney be the killer or is he just a victim of circumstance?

This is a rather funny very dark Scottish comedy that has some flashes of utter brilliance. The titles of the soap operas watched by Barney's wife and the character names are hysterical! There is also a fair amount of Glaswegian slang and I have to confess to having to look up quite a few words and phrases, but I thought this added feel to the book.

At just under 4000 Kindle locations this is a full length novel that will give you several hours of enjoyable reading. Presentation on the Kindle is also well up to standard with no obvious formatting errors.

Overall: 5 stars - Very dark and very funny. You won't look at your own barber in the same way after reading this book!

5.0 out of 5 stars Funny & Original 13 Dec 2001
By A Customer
Format:Paperback
I first came to read this book on the recommendation of an Amazon review. I found it to be totally hilarious, with a very original plot. The Glaswegian accents only served to make the dialogue even funnier and the banter between characters is unbeatable. I never really gave much thought to barbers (being a woman!), but this has definitely changed my way of thinking!

5.0 out of 5 stars A cut above the rest 16 July 2001
Format:Paperback
Having only just discovered this masterpiece by Douglas Lindsay I'm already well into the second. This is pure genius - the superb characters, the Glasweigan banter and the throwaway lines make it one of the best books I've read in years. It's so well written that you cannot second guess what's coming next. Now where can I get a Kevin Keegan '74?!?!

5.0 out of 5 stars Hilarious murder & mayhem 20 Nov 2011
By Midnight TOP 500 REVIEWER
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
A wife so pre-occupied with TV soaps, she barely manages to have a conversation; a more than a bit dottled 84 year old mother who's an enthusiastic devotee of TV quiz shows with the most bizarre titles; and work colleagues he cannot abide. This is the most humdrum life of poor, wretched, miserable Barney Thomson, a barber living in Glasgow. However, everything is soon to change - a serial killer is on the loose and the ensuing carnage presents Barney with almost insurmountable challenges.

I had laughed all the way through the Barney Thomson novella The End Of Days so I was looking forward to reading the first in the series of Barney Thomson stories. 'The Long Midnight' certainly did not disappoint; in fact, I ended up being banished to another room to continue reading it as everyone else got fed up with me laughing and then diligently trying to explain what I was finding so amusing!

Douglas Lindsay manages to capture and parody so much from everyday life then skillfully fuses it into a witty crime/murder story. The result is a tremendously entertaining black comedy.

The ending leaves you in no doubt there must be a sequel and I cannot wait to find out what happens in the next story.

5.0 out of 5 stars A deliciously spine-tingling black comedy. 26 Feb 1999
By A Customer
Format:Paperback
The Long Midnight of Barney Thompson is that rare animal - a black comedy that really is black and yet truly funny. From its macabre opening in a wet and windy Glasgow, the book continues at great pace to a bizarre and wonderfully wrought climax by the shores of a dark Scottish loch. Anyone who has ever sat musing in a barber's chair will recognise the accuracy of the characterisation - although the level of debate, or "patter" as the locals call it, transcends most of the repartee to be found in my local purveyor of short back and sides. This is a racy and well crafted book which will entertain and absorb. Don't miss it.

5.0 out of 5 stars A breath-holding, page turning, hilarious read. 22 Aug 2001
Format:Paperback
When I started to read this book I knew there was going to be a murder but couldn't believe that Barney was capable of such a thing, which he clearly isn't. However the murder(s) happen and I lost valuable hours of sleep unable to stop reading this hilarious tale. It hasn't made me scared to go to the barbers but it has made me very wary of my work colleagues.

This book was refreshingly original and really, really funny! The plot is superb, and as for poor Barney Thompson ... what a guy! I recommend this book to everyone; like me, you'll wonder on earth why you hadn't heard of Barney already.

I downloaded this after seeing a recommendation by bestselling crime writer, Sam Millar whose latest thriller The Darkness of Bones The Darkness of Bones is just out for the Kindle. This is a dark and very funny story despite the fact we are dealing with murder and death. Grab a copy now!
