Good but short 17 Nov 2010

I can smell the inscence. No traditional songs here, , instrumentals straight out of some sun baked hippy commune of the 60s. Eastern and brilliant. Peter Walker , another of those guys who was infuential to fellow musicians, has cult status and a quality of work thats brilliant, but never quite caught on with the record buying public. One day. Only complaint bout this Cd is it aint very long ! Still worth checking out though.

Hypnotic, Mesmerising, Beautiful! 21 Jun 2010

I purchased this archival release because I have always been a fan of Peter Walker's 1966 Vanguard label folk raga masterpiece, Rainy Day Raga. This 1970 session was recorded at Levon Helm's house in Woodstock, N.Y. But don't expect the Americana of the Basement Tapes, or Music From Big Pink. This is a different bag altogether. Long Lost Tapes is comprised of mostly instrumental Indian raga and middle eastern numbers. Some similar musical references would be the title track of the Butterfield Blues Band's "East-West" album, or the middle eastern influenced pieces by the LA based 60s psych band Kaleidoscope.
This recording features a fuller instrumental ensemble than Rainy Day Raga, including Peter Walker on guitar, Rishi on bass, Perry Robinson on clarinet, Mark Whitecage on flute and alto sax, Detroit homeboy Maruga Booker on Trap drums, frame drum, and bells, and Badal Roy (Miles Davis, John Mclaughlin, Lookout Farm) on tabla. The music has a droning, hypnotic quality, and is very psychedelic. Rishi's heavy bass riffs preclude this from being "new age" music, and Maruga's percussion touches are very imaginative and startling. There is a vocal on one track, but it is unobtrusive.
The only drawback is that the running time is a bit short at 36 minutes. However, the sound quality is excellent. If you are a fan of Peter Walker, world music, or psychedelia, I can't recommend this release highly enough! Kudos to the Tompkins Square label for putting it out!
