5.0 out of 5 stars Extract from Kirkus Discoveries reviewing the book A Long Journey Together , 4 Jan 2009
By Abhijit Banerjee (UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
From Kirkus Discoveries: A diplomatic treatise on relations among and beyond India, Pakistan and Bangladesh since 1947.
Retired Indian diplomat and scholar Banerjee traces the post-colonial political life of South Asia with care, drawing the picture of a region fraught with tensions originating in the decisions its midcentury leaders made. Most notably, Pakistan was created as a specifically Muslim country,
originally as two landmasses separated by about 1,000 miles of northern India. After 30 years, East Pakistan sought independence and, with India's help, became Bangladesh. Such explanation barely indicates the intricacies the author explores or the tensions in the political relationships in the region, which is perhaps the most densely populated and poverty-stricken on the planet. In his comprehensive and palatable text, Banerjee pointedly explores the fact that India, which is a large and secular parliamentary democracy, receives far less support from the United States than Pakistan, a practical theocracy and a hotbed for militant Islamic fundamentalists. The United States. provides arms to
Pakistan in exchange for a close ally in the region--an allegiance which has become more important recently given the country's proximity to
Afghanistan. In a curious twist, Pakistan has been a hotbed of militant Islamic fundamentalism for decades--beginning in the late 1970s, when the
United States recruited extremists there and trained them as anti-Soviet fighters. Banerjee yearns for a past during which India was not partitioned, and its Muslim might was able to unify without the use of terror. The author presents a veritable landslide of information with a relatively even hand, emphasizing his position as an individual with extensive knowledge and experience, but who has little at stake. His objectivism is occasionally marred by an undercurrent of Indian nationalism, but such moments are fleeting in this legitimate work of political scholarship. This book will likely prove most useful to students of the region. An illuminating, invaluable work.
