After returning from Treasure Island, Long John Silver discovers that another pirate, Mendoza, has kidnapped Jim Hawkins and the governor s daughter. Long John Silver decides to mount a rescue operation, but there is more than just the recovery of Jim that appeals; there could be treasure to be had along the way.

This brought back memories of my childhood watching Robert Newton as Long John Silver, when I gleefully made my teddy "walk the plank". However, this sequel to Disney's film of Treasure Island leaves something to be desired. The acting is fine and tale not so bad, complete with a "Blind Pue" substitute in marooned blind sailor Israel. However, the action scenes shot at night are so dark as to be unwatchable. This is obviously an inexpensivey made DVD from a poor film copy. A better or enhanced DVD could have been made showing all the actoin clearly. Enjoyable at such a cheap price but a great pity, shipmates, when there be better treasure out there for the asking. Aargh! Send the landlubbers who made this to Davey Jones locker! One for die hard fans only.

Newton does carry this whole series. He is great! But this is low low budget. Sometimes the backgrounds appear to be a hanging canvas with a wall painted on it. And the female lead speaks with SUCH a New York Bronx accent it grates on me. Jim is a woosie of the first degree. The other pirates are very stereotypical; hook, eye-patch and scars parade.

When dealing with "budget" DVD versions of old films it can truly be said that you get what you pay for, with the occasional nugget gleaming through the tarnished treasures of an earlier age....
For starters, this version (Elstree Hill) is a pan and scan version of a widescreen original as can be seen from the squashed titles fore and aft... it's also from a print that has seen better days, with jerky motion evident and a few scenes with torrential scratches. And when we have "day for night" shots it is sometimes difficult to see anything in the murky depths of what appears to be an old 16mm hire print... although with the slight pulling at the top of the picture I wonder whether or not there's a VHS generation somewhere in the path to DVD...
Having established the budget quality credentials of the beast, it must be said that as a movie it's not bad at all, with Newton exhibiting real villainy as the old unidexter... Old Long John has more moral ambiguity here than in the Disney "Treasure Island" that inspired the (very non-Disney) sequel.
It must also be remembered that this movie propelled the old rogue into a television series (also available in several ports on DVD that be, too)during the course of which he almost grew lovable.
So why 3 stars when the print is rougher than an old sailors chanty? The price. This film won't deplete your treasure overmuch and for all it's faults is worth watching - just for the joys of watching Newton ham it up for all he's worth.
Buy it anyways, shipmates! You won't regret it, Arrrr!
