RIYL: Civil Wars, The Cure, Bauhaus, Norah Jones. A dark, brooding, and brilliant piece of work by John Paul White (award-winning songwriter and half of the Grammy®-nominated, Billboard chart-toppers Civil Wars). Recorded at the legendary FAME Studios in Muscle Shoals (Aretha Franklin, Little Richard), this solo album presents a fresh take on the classic Southern Gothic style, presented by the then-unknown undiscovered talent. Set to be released on Columbia, it was recorded & produced by Mike Hedges (U2, The Cure) and set to be a landmark launching pad for White s career until the Civil Wars took off and all plans for this record were set aside. My favorite ... it s exquisite. TAYLOR SWIFT Blissful, swooning chemistry. BOB BOILEN, NPR Through bands such as the Civil Wars, a new music industry is born. LA TIMES Brutally honest and exquisite love songs. WALL STREET JOURNAL

John Paul White is one half of the fantastic duo, the Civil Wars, with Joy Williams. This album couldn't be further from the stripped down 'alternative folk/Americana' of Barton Hollow and reminds me of Muse.
At times, haunting, melancholic, powerful and moody, this record exhudes class. Excellent playing, strong melodies and interesting lyrics make this a real joy to listen to.
Some real slow burners on here, but stand out track is 'Come Over', which is immense.
Give it a go, you won't be diappointed.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great 23 Sep 2013
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
A really great album, I bought this because I am a fan of The Civil Wars and I wasn't disappointed. Some songs took a few listens to grow on me but after that I was hooked.

I am still dreading the announcement that The Civil Wars are done as a duo but if John Paul puts out more music of this quality it will at least lessen the blow

4.0 out of 5 stars Quality 10 April 2013
By Swampy
Format:Audio CD
Now known for The Civil Wars and some songwriting credits in Nashville, JPW's earlier album shines with quality songwriting and singing. More rock than country, easily accessible; a really good album

4.0 out of 5 stars Deep 12 April 2012
Format:MP3 Download
I really like this album. Like the other reviewer, I found this very interesting. The song "Neon" does remind me of Muse. My favorite was "This Life." I cannot get it out of my head. I think what is so good about this album is that it is eclectic and original. You will not be disappointed.

5.0 out of 5 stars BEFORE The Civil Wars - AWESOME! 13 Feb 2012
By Kaethe L. Parker - Published on Amazon.com
After hearing Poison and Wine by The Civil Wars, I started looking this duo up online to find out more. I found that John Paul White released this solo album prior to them getting together and creating the duo. WOW!!!!!! This guy is awesome! Loved this album - can't believe we didn't hear more about him before - his voice is so melodic. Love The Civil Wars, but he was GREAT even on his own!!!!!

Each song is beautifully composed. Definitely worth buying, but the only downside is that you can't find the lyrics to these songs anywhere. It will be greatly appreciated if someone can give me the link to the lyrics! :)

5.0 out of 5 stars Just beautiful. 27 Mar 2013

I'd recommend this to anyone. JPW has an amazing, mesmerizing voice. I've been hoping the Civil Wars would get back together and make more music but that's pretty doubtful. I was thrilled to run across this album and hope John Paul does a lot more. The world needs more music like this.

5.0 out of 5 stars JPW - a great song writer 28 July 2013
By Jascherm - Published on Amazon.com

this album has a tremendous overall feel and mood to it. A bit somber and melancholy yet with some pep and a back beat at times. JPW uses a wide sweep of sounds and tones to add depth to the songs. I'd rank it up there along with other great artists like City and Colour and of course the Civil Wars.

5.0 out of 5 stars JPW !! 19 Mar 2013
By A. Carroll - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
how does someone get to be almost 40 and not have been heard about til 2012!
JPW is amazing and not that he looks like Johnny Depp but his voice and music are hypnotic. Great talent and with the joining of Joy to the Civil Wars, I just hope they keep on making music together. Two amazing, talented, writers and musicians.
