I don't think I'm going to add anything new to what other people have written here - I'm merely expressing another vote of FIVE stars for this astonishing, polished work. I'm glad the people of Amazon have mostly favoured this album. It surely deserves the praise.
Nina's new love of the country style which she displayed very well without the other Cardigans on her A Camp album shows very much here. To the rest of the Cardigans' credit however, they add something very perfect and very natural to this album which was lacking on her 'solo' venture.
This sound suits her voice so well. I was a fan of Gran Turismo, but it's this dusky setting, sat at home on your own with only a bottle of wine for company, where this album excels.
The slow and the not so slow tracks here are balanced nicely. Not too maudlin, and not too up tempo, but it's the slower tracks which work best for me. The incredibly debilitating "Couldn't Care Less" is one of finest songs I've ever ever heard, and on every listen stops me in my tracks.
Musically and lyrically, this is wonderful stuff, and the polished production never goes over the top. The finest instrument is of course the singer, but this truly is a band effort - every note played, every instrument chosen all adds to this great great album. There are a few lyric cliches here and there, but I'm sure many bands whose native language is English will kick themselves that a Swede has a better command of expression and poetry than they do...
There are loads of highlights on this album - "Communication", "And Then You Kissed Me", "Lead Me Into The Night", "Feathers and Down" and "03:35 No Sleep" are particularly exceptional for me.
Enjoy (bottle of wine optional).

I thought, shockingly enough, I might be the first person to provide a glowing review of this CD but someone else (apparently) bought the CD too & beat me to it!
This, in my humble estimation, is The Cardigans at their best - the tormented, twisted, tenebrous undercurrents still bubbling up under what are superlatively crafted jaunty ("pop") songs with some very clever, brutally honest lyrics. Perhaps a tad more upbeat & accoustic-based than Gran Turismo but hey, bands have to move on. The played-incessantly highlights for me are: Communication - beautifully sweeping with orchestral backdrop & such aching vulnerability from Nina Persson's vocal you (may) want to cry. And Then You Kissed Me - Nina on top form relating the darker side of love and making no apologies for it! You're The Storm - this is exactly what I mean by "jaunty" (singalong), but with such shimmering songwriting brilliance (the lyric especially). These guys are just too clever for their own good.
On a parting note, does anyone else think Nina sounds a little disconcertingly like Sheryl Crow on A Good Horse? Or is it just my ears?!

i have to be honest - i bought this on the strength of the single "for what it's worth". all too often, i've been bitterly disappointed when i've done this and the album has just gone to prove the theory that everybody has one great song in them, but sadly it's the only one. in this case though, i was impressed if a little surprised.
i'd like to be able to write one of those music journo reviews that dissects the album track by track and describes each one in detail. but as i've listened to this album on my 1 hour drive to and from work i've got no idea what track numbers are, let alone what the songs are called, so that kind of puts paid to that idea.
however, the greatest endorsement i can give for this album is that it stayed in my cd player in the car for 3 uninterrupted weeks (thats 30+ plays) before it was replaced. it is undoubtedly an album of songs in a contemplative mood, but more bittersweet that full on radiohead introspectiveness. the recording itself is absolutely outstanding which gives the album a very laid back and natural feel.
if you want an album of "lovefool" pop ditties, you'll be very disappointed, but listen with an open mind and it's hard to deny that this is a very very good album.

this is my favourite cardigans album to date. although yes as Dominic Wills says it's a big shift in style and theme (see Amazon.co.uk review above), i personally don't see anything wrong about it [totally agree with the rest of his review though]. the lyrics are eerily accurate in what people in most relationships go through (or perhaps only if you're female...). to sing about love with the right kind of "atmosphere" is hard; exceptionally hard i feel. but the cardigans manage this with ease and finesse. just think of all the teeny bopper love songs you've heard so far. so many people sing of love. sometimes i wonder if they really know what they're singing about when you think about their lyrics and then hear the song (and beat) that it's set to.
if you like dark, mellow tunes and the occassional heartache, then you should really try this album.

I first really noticed The Cardigans one day in my car. I found a channel playing a song, which I thought must be a new Sheryl Crow single. I was very surprised when the DJ announced that it was The Cardigans. I don't remember which song it was, but I knew I had to buy one of their CD's to check out a whole album. At the time the only Cardigan song I knew was "My Favorite Game", and I had thought they were a pure light-weight pop-act.
I chose to buy "Long Before Daylight", and I could not have made a better choice. Great songs, great playing, great productions, fine lyrics and a terrific versatile singer in Nina Persson. This band had really matured since "My Favorite Game". Anyone who likes Sheryl Crow will like this album too.

Opening with the ballad "Communication" the high standards are set right from the start. The up-beat "You're the Storm" is equally strong.

"A Good Horse" could have been the song I mistook for Sheryl Crow.

"The acoustic "And Then You Kissed Me" is simply beautiful - a song that would also suit Lisa Ekdahl.

The airy "Couldn't Care Less" is my least favourite on the album - maybe it needs some more time.

"Please Sister" is another highlight - a little like Roxette; when they're at their best!

The hit-single "For What it's Worth" is simply a catchy pop-tune; and a great one of its kind.

The hymnal quiet ballad "Lead Me into the Night" is another beautiful melody.

The melodic pop-rocker "Live and Learn" is just irresistible. One of my present favourites!

The final two tracks are both lyrically very moving. "Feathers and Downs" is a magnificent ballad. The final track "03.
