I had assumed, given their name, that BB Brunes were a boy band, targeted at the younger end of the market. They may well appeal to this demographic, but their appeal is much wider too. My family and I discovered them in French hotel rooms with the TV tuned to the music video channels as we were getting ready for the next stage of our holiday journey. We could all sing bits of their summer 2013 hit Aficionado after only two hearings.

I sometimes think that most of the basic element of pop music have been discovered in the last forty years or so, and so all that is left for artists now is to assemble from this bag of tricks in a new order with a new shading. Reviews, even those from the professionals in paid-for publications, seem to take the form of "think band A plus singer B with a dark twist of C and there you have album D." And BB Brunes can be reviewed thus: this is not startlingly original, avant guard boundary pushing music.

Each song on the album is different from every other song. All the songs have memorable tunes and words that make sense. They often take unexpected turns. They rattle along at a radio friendly rate; danceable, hummable. The singer adopts a charming half whisper style most of the time - this is no talent contest shout-a-thon. It's guitar led plus bass and a smattering of keyboards and an actual drummer using bits of wood to hit drums and cymbals. No one raps, there are no bass drops: the distortion guitars is at a minimum. The videos (found all over the net) feature beautiful young women and handsome young men. The lyrics make sense and resonate in a slightly melancholic and insouciant manner.

Oh, OK then... think "Technique" era New Order tracks with lyrics written by LLoyd Cole from the start of his solo career and sung by a Nick Drake almost fully recovered from mild case of laryngintis. In French. Voila.

This is a very good album, even though it is a french band, the songs are very catchy and melodic, worth a listen.

I have discovered a nice energy from a jong French Group. There are 4 ou 5 good songs within to begin the day happy in the car.
