Product Description

100 track collection celebrating the impact the railroad had on USA's population. The constant movement of people away and towards better or worse situations and the trains that got them there are a large part of the lyrical consciousness of all American Folk music. In this extensive Proper Records collection we have a cross-section of genres that perfectly illustrate the impact the railways had on the movement, sound, and consciousness of musicians from all strands of the Folk music of the USA. Tracks from household names such as Hank Williams, Johnny Cash, Elvis Presley mingle with the obscure. Included are all the hallmarks of the series - a booklet filled with the "musical" story of the early American railroads, rare photos and discographical information.

This is not a definitive collection of American train songs, as a lot of famous train songs are omitted, nor does this set represent the full range of styles, as there is no jazz or swing music here. Hopefully, the label will eventually release a collection of jazz and swing train songs too.

Meanwhile, we have this collection of blues, country and folk train songs Blues and country later combined in the form of rock'n'roll, which is represented here by Elvis Presley, Johnny Burnette and Chuck Berry.

The booklet is a lot slimmer than I expected with 24 pages compared to around 44 for earlier releases on the label. As the box size is unchanged, the contents do not fit snugly inside. The booklet contains no pictures of artists, but if they wanted to cut something, better to cut those than the informative notes.
Among the country artists featured, I was surprised by the omission of Roy Acuff, but there is plenty of other great country music here including two tracks each by the Monroe brothers, the Carter family, Jimmie Rodgers and Johnny Cash, together with tracks by the Delmore brothers, Hank Williams and some less famous artists.

Blues music appears to occupy a little over half this collection, but in any case I haven't counted and in any case the division between blues, country and folk music isn't straightforward. Among the blues songs, three tracks feature Leadbelly including the classics Midnight special and Rock Island line.

The recording of C C and O blues is by Pink Anderson (apparently the inspiration for the first part of Pink Floyd's name) and Simmie Davis, a female singer I'd never heard of previously.

A 100 track collection of vintage train songs from the 20s into the 50s.It doesn't aim on completeness as there are literally 1000s of these songs but its possibly the first time a collection has been compiled at this length.
Its really an American peculiarity-the British ones could probably be counted on one hand (Six Five Special (Bob Cort),Train Song (Vashti Bunyan),,Finchley Central (New Vaudeville Band) Country Line Special) (Cyril Davies All Stars)
Neither is it meant to be the Greatest Train Hits-there's no sign of Chatanooga Choo Choo,Life's Railway to Heaven or Freight Train (either by Chas McDevitt's Skiffle Group of the originator Elizabeth Cotton)or the 20s song revived by the Temperance Seven-Pasadena
Clearly there are more train songs out there than you could imagine

Bought on a whim and still enjoying some of the most quirky songs with good mouth organ and banjo playing. Hill Billy meets blues.
