Great 12 Aug 2011
By Amy
Format:Paperback
It is definitely worth paying the extra to get the most recent version. Things have changed in SE Asia so much that the old ones still say you cannot do thing that are now easily accessible.

I bought this book and used it when travelling around south east asia. Although it's quite useful to find somewhere to stay etc, I came to hate it over time. It's basically trying to cram too much in. It covers a load of countries and many places only get a few pages. It lists a few places to stay, which are all overrun with other people who bought this book. It's big and heavy and doesn't cover anywhere in great depth. I like lonely planet, I also used their guides in New Zealand, USA, Fiji and Australia, but this South East Asia book just doesn't do anywhere justice. Second hand guide books can be picked up cheap all over asia, so buy one for the country you're in, and the next one after, and then just swap or buy and sell them as you go. You get a wider range of places to stay and things to do, and it's usually lighter in the backpack too. So don't buy this book, but get other Lonely Planets instead.

I bought this book prior to a 6 month trip out East with the kids and used it through every step of the planning and then visited just about every country in the book.
I found it to be a superb resource and an absolute lifesaver at times.

I estimate this book saved us hundreds of pounds and got us out of a few spots of bother by providing us the best information on the locations to find our accommodation. The border advice is all up to date and the book is full of maps that are a god send when you turn up in places like Jakarta off a 3am flight from Singapore.

The only problem we found was that some of their 'best pick' places were a bit suspect. In fact some were down right ridiculous and I am not convinced money/free beer didn't cross hands.

That said, I wouldn't dream of going back to the Far East without this beauty. Just ignore the 'best picks' and you'll be fine.

Disappointing as a Kindle book

Good stuff!!!
Very happy with the purchase. Was much cheaper than in stores as well, even though I had to pay to ship it to Ireland, so well worth it.

not great
I'm comparing this book to the lonely planet china book, so maybe my judgement of it is harsh as that book is larger and more detailed. Read more

Content as expected. Binding awful
I bought this guide for planning purposes, anticipating that it wouldn't be detailed enough to hit the road with it as the sole source of information. Read more

You can avoid some of the hassles by getting a one-month e-visa (US$25) from www.mfaic.gov.kh. It takes three business days to issue and is valid for entry to Cambodia at the Phnom Penh and Siem Reap airports and, by land, at Bavet, Poipet and Cham Yeam. "e;
