I would definitely recommend Lonely Planet's 'Best in Travel 2010', as long as you are clear as to what you are getting. This is not like the Lonely Planet 'Shoestring' series of books, which help you (in fantastic detail) explore a country or a region on a budget. It is, essentially, a collection of ideas for travel that need to be explored elsewhere in greater detail, a book to give you inspiration rather than implementation. You'll definitely find yourself wanting to do a lot of things it talks about, but it's not going to provide much help doing them. As long as you are aware of that, definitely go for it!

This would have been a lovely item to open at Christmas 2009. But I'm not sure who would buy it thereafter. It is an interesting read, and good for inspiration, but really has very little useful content. It specifically refers to events over the next 12 months, so would be far less useful in 2011 - although Lonely Planet are bound to have the 2011 book to replace it by then!

I am a great fan of the Lonely Planet guides, and have an ever-expanding collection as I buy one whenever we go anywhere. But this smacks of a book just rather cynically trying to grab a bit of the Christmas market (and get you to buy another Lonely Planet guide) without a lot to say for itself. I did enjoy reading about those must-see destinations, but it hasn't changed my travel plans in the short- or long-term at all.

All in all a nice book to receive if you haven't yet made your holiday plans for 2010, and need inspiration, but you need to be prepared to then go and buy an actual guidebook to your chosen destination.

This is quite a small book, only slightly wider than a standard paperback size, but quite thick. It's full colour and well presented with lots of attractive photographs.

There are 4 sections (Top 10 Countries, Top 10 Regions, Top 10 Cities and Top Travel Lists) and there's even a fold out travel planner which incorporates the inside of the back cover. In January it suggests going to The Lowcountry Oyster Festival (USA), Gynaikokratia where women do male activities and vice versa (Greece) and The Feast of the Three Kings (India)!

Each 'chapter' has a map so you can see where in the world the place is, an information piece with things like population, language, industries, currency and cost index (i.e. how much a cup of coffee is in local currency and US dollars). There are short sections which vary depending on the place being covered but include things such as Festivals and Events, Defining Experiences, Random Facts, Life Changing Experiences and Classic Places to Stay - amongst many more.

The section on Top Travel Lists include a wide variety of suggestions. One list is Vegetarian Heaven & Hell and includes places that are great places for veggies to go and places that they should avoid. However, my favourite travel list has to be "The World's Top Choc Spots"! Yes, Belgium is #1 but there are some unexpected chocolate places that I'll now have to go and discover :)

If you love travel and want some inspiration for your next trip or just want to learn some new snippets about various places around the world then this book is ideal. It would make a nice gift for a travel-keen person. My only negative is that it's a little on the small side and I had expected a larger format.

Gives some good ideas but short on detail
This book lists the up and coming places to visit in 2010. A good combination of very far flung exotic places as well as some closer destinations. Read more

Only 10 countries
Only 10 countries mentioned in this book and they are not the usual ones. Interesting and informative but not quite a book you would buy if you were looking to travel. Read more
