I had previous purchased the DK Eyewitness Travel Guide: Sicily, but found it no use at all when it came to planning our holiday as it lacked depth of information. I then purchased this Lonely Planet edition and found it excellent - full of useful information and prcatical advice that was necessary for making decisions about where to go and how to go about it. We plan to visit some of the Islands and it had good links to ferry timetables, length of ferry trips, how to get about on each island and plenty of good detailed itineries and routes once there. I have purchased several of the Lonley Planet guides and find them to be of a good standard, but this one in particular was very helpful. Thoroughly recommend it.

Outstanding guidebook.
I have usually only bought DK Eyewitness guides but decided this time to also try this one from Lonely Planet and now I am converted!

While the Eyewitness series have always been good and useful, they tend to be more visual and easily digested. The Lonely Plant guide is rather the opposite.

At first glance, it looks "text heavy" but in fact it is incredibly well thought out and divided into logical regional sections and further sub-sections. It is simply packed with VERY useful information and great recommendations for things to see, do and places to eat.

We made heavy use of the restaurant recommendations and they were spot-on every time. Frequently fantastic eateries off the beaten track that we would never have found on our own.

The guide was clearly written by authors with an intimate knowledge and genuine passion for the subject. Loved the occasional "wink of the eye" style :)

In the end, I think that the 2 books complement each other well and will probably buy both for future trips but if forced to chose one, I would make the Lonely Planet guide my first choice.

This guide followed the usual format for Lonely Planet, which is good. The recommendations for restaurants in the two cities we visited were spot on, Mama Rosanna in Trattoria di De Fi Fiore Catania is a real character. There were several locals in when we went, always a good sign. The other place we visited was Syracuse and, as we stayed in a hotel very near the Jonico-a Rutta 'e ciauli we ate there several times. Both of those establishments were to be highly recommended for good, tasty. Sicilian food. The only thing missing in this guide was the 'top end', 'mid range' and 'budget' sections for hotels.

We have so far been to one of our destinations (Catania), but have found 3 of the suggested eateries to not exist. Considering this was published in Jan of this year we find this surprising, and are now wondering how accurate the book is going to be for our remaining destinations ( Syracuse, Noto, Ragusa, Modica). The other information, especially history and sights, has been much more successful.

Lonely Planet has upped their game since I last used one of their guides. This one for Sicily is crammed full of info about history, culture, food and festivals as well as the usual recommended itineraries, hotels and transportation. It has a good selection of maps--some of them of principal cities, but LP still does not include a lot of glossy photos. I don't mind the latter absence--my first choice for guides is still the Michelin greens, and they are also stingy with illustrations.
At $20.00 LP Sicily is neither cheap nor expensive, but a pretty good value for a lot of useful information.

Came in very useful during our holiday in Sicily. We tended to seek out the restaurants recommended in the book, many of which we would never have found, and most were excellent. Very comprehensive information about the different areas of the island, which towns and cities to see and which to avoid and the pick of the various sites and attractions on offer. It was a great holiday and made much easier with the Lonely Planet guide to follow.

I went to Palermo for a week so certain info in the book was out of date i.e The AMAT bus company in Palermo do sell 2,3,4,5,6,7 day Bus Passes for Palermo and pick pockets work in gangs on certain routes in the City Center,my wallet was stolen in a zipped pocket on a journey from Palermo Stadium to the Via Roma.It is the nature of Guide Books to be out of date immediately but info like Robbery will never age.

Looks great, I have been reviewing a few pages of the guide in preparation for a trip in July. The guide is clear and detailed, definitely worth buying.
