I bought this book as soon as the new edition was released, and used it when travelling in the philippines during Aug-Sept 2012 just a couple of months later.
I have to say that it is the usual LP Guide, covering a lot of issues and places, with detailed and correct infos about many topics.
I found that - as usual - it was really helpful travelling alone (backpacjking, with no previous reservations) through many places; in fact I also had the Roughwear guide, but decided to take with me only the LP, and I wasn't disappointed.
Nonetheless I found out that while there's plenty of info about the places covered in the guide, there are too many places not even mentioned in the book - Philippines are over 7000 islands, and they would well deserve a double sized book. This was a serious issue about the book.
The second thing I noticed is about the prices : it's the new edition, just a few months old, so it was supposed to be up-to-date, but the prices of food and lodging were always higher than the ones quoted in the book. With all the discounts of the low monsoon season I could hardly reach the high season price of the guide.
And then, the new edition is printed on filmsy paper, and the quality of the colour pics lower than in the previous edition.
So the bottom line is: a good guide, helpful and necessary for independent travellers, but not perfect.

1.0 out of 5 stars worst lonely planet ever 26 Feb 2013
By tony p
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I normally love lonely plant guides but this was close to useless. The prices for everything in the philippines we re much higher than stated. The advice for walks and trips must have been made by someone who didn't actually go as they were that unhelpful. Most importantly though, there just isn t enough information about transport and some lesser known towns and areas. the travel to/from section just consisted of how to get to that particular destination from manila. No good if you re moving around. We ditched it and used the internet as having such incomplete (and just plain wrong) information almost made it harder.

Having said that, the manila section seemed good.

1.0 out of 5 stars Utter rubbish and completely useless 28 Jun 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I'm a big fan of Lonely Planet but the kindle version is completely useless. I have a fourteen year old printed guide to the Philippines with 100 times more information in it. This was a complete waste of money.

Good accurate and reasonably thorough content (as far as we can tell). Kindle version difficult to navigate and cross reference as only a few key places linked through out each chapter. So for example if you are looking for Bohol, you need to have prior knowledge of where it is in the Philippines to work out which chapter its in, then leaf through the whole chapter untill you find it as its not listed in the chapter content at the beginning. Will in future stick to paper versions despite the added weight. This may be a personal thing but make sure it suits you. Maps much better on ipad kindle than paper white kindle as more detail and can enlarge pics.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book 1 Nov 2013
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I had the 2006 version but thought I should get an up-to-date one for my next visit to the Philippines. It has useful maps and very helpful information for planning a trip. The last two times we've been (2006 and 2008) we found the information to be very accurate. I would recommend this book to anyone who is planning on travelling around the Philippines as it covers the whole country in great detail.
