Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

Lonely Planet provides full-service guides in a candid, compact style, and that's what David Ellis's Lonely Planet New York City guide delivers, attending diligently to every topic any New York visitor might possibly need or desire. For the New York novice, there are all the elementary details, such as tourist offices, embassies, money, post offices, electricity, laundry, where to get maps, and primary radio frequencies. Resources are listed for gay and lesbian travellers, as well as for women, seniors, disabled travellers, and families travelling with children. Special events are enumerated, plus good New York Web sites and where to turn in case of emergencies. And that's just one small section of the book. There are also chapters on New York history, climate, geography, and politics; practical details on getting there by air, bus, train, car, motorcycle, boat, and hitchhiking; and getting around the city by subway, bus, taxi, car, and bicycle.

Then comes the heart of the guide, with comprehensive attention to what there is to see and do in Manhattan's many neighbourhoods and outer boroughs; where to stay, eat, and shop; all manner of entertainment, from horse racing and hockey to dance clubs, opera, and bars; as well as an assortment of excursions throughout Long Island, the Hudson Valley, and New Jersey. With an architectural glossary, an extensive index, and an excellent collection of maps, this guide is a thorough New York resource. --Stephanie Gold --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

4.0 out of 5 stars All you need to find your way around the sites of NY!, 11 Jun 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Lonely Planet : New York City (Paperback)
I recently visited the Big Apple and used no other guide but this - it was excellent. The information is up to date and extremely helpful. There are also helpful hints that you may not find elsewhere - e.g. how to get into the New York Stock Exchange, the location of a fantastic discount store, a free boat ride to see Lady Liberty - the list goes on. In the 4 days I was there I used it constantly!!! I would definitely recommend any of the Lonely Planet series to anyone. I have many of them now and they have never let me down!!!

4.0 out of 5 stars Only guide I needed, 22 Jan 2002
Staying in New York City April, 2001 this book was the only one I needed. Great tips for budget and mid range budget traveling. Nicely balanced with tips and history both on the well walked tourist trails and the not-as common sights (like Night Court, the free ferry to Staten Island, NY Library, Harlem Marked, and the Subway museum in Brooklyn). Comprehensive list of stores in all genres whether you're looking for clothes and fashion, music, sports, camera equipment or books. But don't rely on this book for nightlife activeties. It fails somewhat on dining, restaurants and musicals and is not a guide at all for the pub to pub walkers or nightclubs guests.

2.0 out of 5 stars disappointing, 29 Sep 2010
This review is from: Lonely Planet : New York City (Paperback)
recieved a very old copy of the ny guide (pre 9/11 as still has twin towers references) with lots of loose pages at the back (all the map sections) that fall out when you open the book. Very disappointing overall. It was cheap so maybe I should have expected it.
