Review

Nobody covers the world like Lonely Planet.' --New York Post, May 2004

Product Description

Includes FREE planning and background information. Tokyo’s bubbling nabe (pot) of creativity is a rich, long-simmering brew resulting from the mix of age-old Japanese traditions, a modern uberurban society and novel international ingredients. Likewise, its cuisine, popular culture and psyche are curious blends of old Japan and twists of modern tastes. It’s a city torn between the rigidity of rules and etiquette, and the flux of reinvention and fusion – all of which create a flavour that is heady with subtle, fleeting nuances of the recognisable and the totally foreign. The city’s massive scale alone means a stunning abundance of idiosyncratic experiences.

I have just returned from a quick trip to Japan and had a full day off to explore Tokyo. Before i went i had heard it could be quite daunting and hard to get around without guidance so i thought I'd get a guide book to study before i went. This book was perfect, it gave me sound advice and prepared me for the day. It gave me the confidence to explore on my own and was referred to regularly on the day too. Easy to read and easy to find info quickly using the index. This is the only book you need for your guide to Tokyo, up to date with good maps and subway map. It was just a shame i only had 1 day there, so much to do, but at least i have my book for next time.

I love lonely planet guide books as they tell you what is actually good to see and what they think you can miss. This book is no different and gave history along with the information about places to see along with detailed instructions how to get there.

Great guide and would recommend as a Kindle edition as the highlights and notes and marks saved me a lot of trouble on this trip as you are able to highlight everything and then it is saved in your notes and marks and you are able to go back to the section <3

Popular Highlights

(What's this?)
"e;
Shibuya Crossing (Map) is probably one of the world's most visually famous four-way intersections, where the green light given to pedestrians releases a timed surge of humanity. Mostly of interest as a stupendous youth-oriented shopping district and people-watching hotspot, the goods for sale and energy of Shibuya offer glimpses into the desires and psyche of a certain generation. Especially on weekends, you might get the feeling that the jammed streets are populated solely by fashionable under-25s. "e;

COSPLAY However you know them as Harajuku girls, goth-Lolis or cosplay-zoku (costume play gang) these reps of Tokyo youth culture are recognisable all over the world. "e;
