1.0 out of 5 stars Audio content missing 12 Oct. 2014
Format:Kindle Edition with Audio/Video|Verified Purchase
I bought the Kindle version of this book because of the audio content. When it downloaded onto my Kindle Cloud Reader it said that the audio content may not be compatible with my device. So I tried to open it on the Kindle app on my tablet. I could not find any trace of the audio content on either my cloud reader on my pc or on the tablet. I have returned this item for a refund and will purchase the hard copy of the book instead. Please note my one star rating is because of the missing audio content, I am not reviewing the content of the phrasebook itself as I did not use it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good little book- CD could be better 11 Mar. 2010
By It's me - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
This is a fun little phrasebook. Its small and easy to flip through and has fun sections like for instance the Pick UP LINES chapter to help you flirt while in italy (or at least understand when someone is flirting with you). The cd plays some of the more important phrases and words that you are more likely to come across. It's not the easiest thing to reference though. The way it works is that when in the book there is a red box with a number on it, that indicates that that word or phrase is on the CD. So for instance, on page 57 I see the phrase "There is a mistake in the bill." next to it is of coarse the way to say it in italian "C'e un errore nel conto."; as well as a printed transliteration for pronounciation; And there is also a little red box that says 36D. This tells me that to hear this track on the CD I must go to track 36.. and it will be the fourth thing the speaker says on track 36 (because D is the fourth letter of the alphabet.) Each track has anywhere between 3 to 5 sayings so E is the latest letter you come across. There are over 80 tracks on the CD. I would've preferred if there were only 2 sayings per track because that would make it easier to locate phrases. Also, if you want to do it the other way around (if you want to look up in the book something that you heard on the CD) You might have a harder time finding it. I was looking for something on track 64, but there was no #64 in the book. I finally found what the speaker was saying on the page after the #63 markings... but the 64 marking wasn't there. The speaker sounds like a native italian speaker (at least to my ears), but he sounds like he wants to kill himself or something. It's not a bad voice, but it sounds almost like the speaker is in pain and really doesn't want to do this recording. After about 70 tracks you start to hear a female speaker that is much more pleasant. It is nice however to have the audio accompanying this fun little phrasebook. And I do like the fact that there is absolutely no English on the CD which makes it a good study aid should you choose to use it as such. I also bought the japanese version which has a simular format to the italian, but the male japanese speaker on that version is in my opinion also more pleasant to listen to.

2.0 out of 5 stars Phrase Book = Great! CD = Not so Useful 21 Dec. 2011
By KuriousKat - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
The phrasebook by itself is useful - love Lonely Planet. Unfortunately, as another reviewer stated, the CD and the book are not coordinated. It's a shame, really. A little organization would have improved the experience considerably. The phrasebook refers to specific tracks on the CD so that the learner can look up a specific track, select it, and then hear the phrases. But, as another reviewer stated, there are no English translations on the CD and, additionally, no context in which to hold the information as a learner. Just spoken Italian phrases on the CD that are periodically referred to in the phrasebook. I recommend the phrasebook without the CD.

2.0 out of 5 stars Better low cost programs out there 7 Sept. 2011
By MTV in Atlanta - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
You get what you pay for most of the time. The audio CD is worthless - you can't follow along in the book as it jumps all over the place with little rhyme or reason. The speaker says words or phrases once and moves on with no translation included. Good luck following in the book. The book has lots of key phrases, but you can find that anywhere. I switched to the Pimsleur travelers version for about twice the price of this starter set and it's FAR superior to this. Pay another $15 and just get Pimsleur if you need a basic course. This one's no good.

I have listened to the cd for a few months now and haven't learned a single thing. The instruction is so monotonous that my brain will not retain!! I do not recommend this product.
