The book is very detailed about where to stay and where to eat, how to get there and how to get away, and even how to do your laundry. HOWEVER - it doesn't tell you what to see and do. The main attraction are described only briefly and many attraction are not mentioned at all (especially in Berlin and Munich). The book is very good for planning the logistic part of the trip but we needed other books and web sites to know what places to visit. This book is quite a disappointment compared to other Lonely Planet books I have used.

I used to have a Rough Guide to Germany - but needed a new Germany guide book, so thought I would try the Lonely Planet version. However, I much prefer the Rough Guide ones. There is more discussion about each place - and the info seems more accessible to me. Maybe it's just what I am used to as some people rate LPs over RGs...

Whilst living in Germany for the last couple of years I have often relied on my 4 year old version of this guide. The latest version provides much of the same with some minor additions and updates. Still a very useful place to start for the basics.

A particularly enchanting feature of the Scheunenviertel is the quarters Höfe, interlinked hidden courtyards filled with cafes, boutiques and party venues. The best known is the Hackesche Höfe (Map) but also check out the quiet and dignified Sophie-Gips-Höfe (Map) and the breezy Heckmannhöfe (Map). "e;
