Whilst I prefer the depth and detail of the Rough Guides series I went for Lonely Planet this time as the latest edition is currently more up to date (Feb 2014). It proved extremely useful during my recent holiday. It seemed accurate (as far as I could tell) - OK, you expect things like prices to change - and was interesting to read and well researched.

I have deducted a star as the index was not always comprehensive enough. Also, because there are 4 separate indexes one after the other (general, food, entertainment, accommodation) I would often find myself using the wrong one. Better indexing please!

Otherwise this was a very good choice. Recommended.

They try to please everyone although most geared to the budget traveler. Their recommendations are somewhat bohemian so don't appeal to everyone.

Always kept reasonably up-to-date. Comes with a foldout map but not detailed enough. The little maps on the relevant pages in the book are not that useful in practice either, as it's rather heavy to keep carrying around while sightseeing. Will probably use DK or other similar pocket size guides in future - adequate for 3 or 4 day city trips, we find.

The new layout is poor: bitty and to gather information on a particular place you have to jump about the book as not all the info about one thing will be written in one place. Tricky to use and not a great read. Over complicated a great city!
