First Sentence
Though the origins of the Japanese race remain unclear, anthropologists believe humans first arrived on the islands via the land bridges that once connected Japan to Siberia and Korea, and by sea from the islands of the South Pacific. Read the first page

3.0 out of 5 stars Could Be Better, 10 Dec 2009

(REAL NAME)
This guide has its limitations. The street map is hopeless with few of the streets which are marked, named. Strangely the street map from Tourist Info has the same layout but most of the streets are named! There is a reference to a super temple near the Golden Temple and the guide says is a gentle 10 to 15 minute walk This may be true if you are Usain Bolt. There is a regular bus which goes from outside the Golden Temple to this temple but is not mentioned.
The main criticism I have is that it seems if there is a subway station near one of the sights this is given, but not the number of any bus which may also go there. Also it would be useful if the number of all buses which visit a sight was given not just the ones which start at Kyoto station.
Overall the guide was OK when used in conjunction with street and bus maps from the very helpful Tourist info offices.

1.0 out of 5 stars Lacking in so many ways......, 10 Feb 2011
Do not waste your money buying this book or baggage allowance carrying it around.

You can get a better flavour for Kyoto and useful information for your visit there from many other books, general internet searches, Japan National Travel Organisation and specific events from the free monthly-published Kyoto Visitor's guide which is available all over Kyoto when you are there.

As with other lonely planet books this lists lots of information that you don't necessarily need to know and does not inspire.
It also misses it's point as a mere reference book as it's comments can be condescending and so off the mark.

Rubbish.
