5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect resource! 11 Jun 2012
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
Contrary to what it says in the item details the book is a whopping 1350 pages and covers in a reasonable detail all of Europe, with special attention paid to the popular stops. Includes useful information such as history, rainfall / temperature charts for the year, maps, highlights and attractions, where to eat and sleep, information on transport and general tips for each stop... all that for a bargain price.

Perfect resource for anyone planning a European tour!

5.0 out of 5 stars Basic, but massive. 24 April 2012
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
46 countries, 1338 pages - for a tenner it's a bargain. An absolutely essential and reassuring companion if you're planning a big trip around Europe. You might be better off with the more specific country/region books Lonely Planet do if you're planning something shorter - a cancelled bus meant I ended up in Podgorice in Montenegro and there was sod all in the way of help. Saying that, it's hard to see how this book could be bettered when you consider the amount of countries it covers for its size and price.

Personally I find Lonely Planet books brilliant for cultural nouse, history and the best things to do/see but, from experience, a lot of hostels and restaurants tend to hike their prices up when they find out they've been added to it. So, have a look at the reviews for places to stay and ask the locals for the best places to eat and you'll do well.

So - brillaint for sights, maps, directions, cultural background and the history of the countries you'll visit, sound for transport info (can sometimes be a bit vague with areas to catch buses and always check the train/bus times locally as they're always changing). Shop around for accomodation and places to eat.

Oh and there's a brief yes/no/hello/goodbye/please/thank you/I don't understand/where are the toilets? phrasebook at the back that I nearly missed.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent resource for the Europe-hopper 17 May 2013
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
Really good resource for anyone looking to explore many different places in Europe and not looking for anything to in-depth. I am interrailing for a month and the guide book contains all the essential information that I was after such as currency, accomodation, travel, food, things to see/do etc etc...

A very thick and heavy book which I wasn't expecting, for some stupid reason, because there is information on 30+ countries. However, I bought a Lonely Planet when I went to Tanzania and that was my bible out there, so I don't think I'll mind carrying this one around with me. Have had a little read and it hasn't disappointed me so far as it tells me everything I need to know and is a great little read anyway - I can quite happily sit there reading it all night!

As it is very much a summary of each country, there is mainly information on the more well known sights/attractions in each place, although there is a bit of text on the lesser known places to go and things to see/do.
There is so much material on each country that you probably never finish the book. It's something you can flick through as and when you need/want to and there is always something else to learn and find out about.

So, in summary definitely recommended book to buy if you don't mind carrying it around on your travels. I prefer taking the hard copies but if you're more into technology then you can always get the kindle edition if you'd prefer.

Definitley has all the info you need to keep yourself fairly safe but does not delve to deeply into each area. However, a good thing in my opinion that it only scratches the surface, because sticking to closely to the book will mean that you will miss the hidden gems in and about places!!

3.0 out of 5 stars Europe on a shoestring 7 April 2013
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
When this book arrived I realised that it was not suitable for me.Perhaps a younster would travel round Europe carrying a book of over a thousand pages and weighing 1kg but I would be inclined to divide it up into manageable sections.
There is masses of information but restricted to a few towns in each country. However anyone wanting to learn about europe its countries and history will find lots to interest them.

2.0 out of 5 stars Buy something else that is useful 2 Oct 2013
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
Me and my friend spent 3 weeks this summer inter- railing and we hoped that this book would be able to provide us with a quick convenient way to access information on various European cities throughout our trip, hopefully unearthing some budget gems. Usually I am a big fan of lonely planet guide books however this particular book dissapointed me The title is miss-leading as 'living on a shoestring' in my opinion is living as cheaply as possible. The book doesn't recommend cheap accommodation or many under the radar cheap tourist attractions. The attractions it recommends are the typical tourist ones which are usually expensive. Also the book recommends a lot of expensive restruants and accommodation, how is that living on a shoestring? Moreover the sheer size of the book is inconvenient especially when backpacking; it's a bit like lugging a yellow pages around except that it is nowhere as useful. Save your money and go on hostel world and just ask local people for things to do you wont have to carry it around that way.
On a more positive note it did have a few helpful bits of information on major attractions and local beer houses and things, but i am confident i could have more than happily survived without it.
