4.0 out of 5 stars Handy guide! 28 Dec 2009
Format:Paperback
I bought this book to accompany my Colloquial Amharic (Appleyard) book. It is the perfect size to carry around and is useful in summarising grammar and learning the Fidal (syllabic alphabet). I think it would be perfect for anyone planning a trip to Ethiopia or wants to grasp the basics of the language. The only downside is that I don't think the transliteration of the Amharic is always 100% as it should be and doesn't always coincide with the transliteration of some other books.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amharic here I come 6 Oct 2011
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
Amharic is the official language of Ethiopia and there are 70 other languages. Only a few people in the rural areas speak any English. This book got me off to a brilliant start and I swotted a few words each evening and the book was perfect for my sort of casual learning. Please buy it if you go to this country for it is the best book if you want to learn every-day conversation.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Compact Phrasebook! 10 Mar 2014
By Sean M
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
Very small, very detailed and easy to understand and utilize. Pronunciation of letters and syllables is explained very clearly. Highly recommend this for anyone travelling to Ethiopia who wants to at least try and communicate with locals in their native tongue!

2.0 out of 5 stars Primitive almost useless 11 Dec 2013
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
Lonely Planet has come way down from its earlier publications, I had hoped, in vain, that this little book would be useful.
