The 8th edition of Lonely Planet's guidebook about Berlin (written by Andrea Schulte-Peevers) was published in March 2013. I used it before and during a recent visit to Berlin. I found it comprehensive and reliable. Over the years I have read and used several books from Lonely Planet. Not all of them are perfect. When I compare them all, I think this one about Berlin must be one of the best guidebooks ever published by this company.

The main text is divided into four parts. Here is a brief overview:

Part one:
PLAN YOUR TRIP
There are seventeen sections, including advice and suggestions about eating, entertainment, and shopping. There is also a section about the Berlin wall.

Part two:
EXPLORE BERLIN
There are ten sections. The sights are organised in eight neighbourhoods. In addition, there is a section about day trips from Berlin plus a list of hotels, which is organised in the same eight neighbourhoods.

Part three:
UNDERSTAND BERLIN
There are seven sections, including history, arts, and architecture. There is also a section about music (from punk to techno).

Part four:
SURVIVAL GUIDE
There are four sections, including transport and language. In addition, there are several indexes.

At the end of the book there are eleven maps which cover different areas of Berlin. The book comes with a pull-out map which covers central Berlin on one side. On the other side you will find a map of the subway (U-Bahn) and the S-Bahn plus a street index. When folded out the map measures 38 x 53 cm.

Berlin has a lot to offer: something new and something old; something traditional and something very un-traditional. Berlin has it all, and it is all here in this book.

I find Lonely Planet guides simply the best. Easy to find things to do and see in your chosen area, with some lesser known recommendations along with the major sights.

As with all the Lonely Planet books, they are well worth buying for any trip you have planned. We always buy one when we go away and they prove invaluable for getting the most out of your trip; and for finding your way around. The maps are always very handy and there's always a great selection of trips and places to eat.

before travelling to Berlin. I had considered relying on wikitravel and other online sources but this book was really handy to carry around and had some great reviews. I used this along side trip advisor and in the 6 days we were there got through all the good stuff the city has to offer.

I have used LP guides a great deal. Now under new ownership, this series still appear to espouse the principles of their founders. Once one is used to the new format, the guides are as useful as ever. They fit into an overcoat pocket, are spine stitched still and now contain a fold-out city map. I didn't use this only because the hotel at which I was staying provided me with one. This was a first-time visit for me to Berlin and the guide was excellent in giving me a sense of the city, district by district.

The physical book is probably perfectly adequate. However, I bought the kindle edition in order to travel light and conserve packing space. The kindle edition does not easily lend itself to flicking between sections or marking pages. The map included is of very little worth at all when viewed on my kindle touch. Despite being a kindle convert, in future I'll be buying tangible guidebooks

It was not as good as the Boston guide which I would give 5* to. Not being a German speaker I found some aspects confusing like Museumsincel until I actually arrived at Museum island itself. It also lacked detailed information on Berlin's very good public transport network. I don't recall seeing much on the the 3 train systems and the excellent bus network. However it was very good at identifying the must see sights. It ought to have advised anyone coming for a few days to take a City bus tour (get a 2 day pass and hop and off) and a boat tour on the river Spree.

I bought this to help plan a trip to Berlin (which I haven't visited for 20 years) with grandchildren. It is certainly doing that.
