I first heard of this book when I was a teenager and with great anticipation finally got around to reading it - and was disappointed. While it is a nicely written book I did not find myself feeling any empathy towards any of the characters, including the main character - the mute. I understand this to be a book about disillusionment, and that is exactly how it left me feeling. A book I could put down.
