Book Description

29 Oct 2010
Everyone experiences loneliness in their lives. Yet most people are secretly afraid of it, and will do nearly anything to avoid it. Few are willing to talk about it at all. This book shows that loneliness is not simply a social phenomenon, nor a medical condition. Rather, it is an existential condition of life. So you can't turn to other people, or true love, for a solution. Nor can you turn to God, for God is probably lonelier than you are! But loneliness is not evil. Indeed it can be a source of profound spiritual insight. Great religious heroes like Moses, Jesus, Buddha, and Mohammad made their most important spiritual revelations in solitude. This book offers a new understanding of the idea of Revelation, as a way of being in the world which gives spiritual significance to the arts, human relationships, love, and indeed to loneliness itself. It has four simple but far-reaching principles: I am here; this is what I am; and what I am is beautiful! Is anyone else out there?

Review

More than just another vitally important book, Myers' analysis confronts our very raison d'etre against our uncertain times. He asks the questions that most prefer not to ask. --(Michael York, Theologian, former director of the Sophia Centre at Bath Spa University, and author of Pagan Theology: Paganism as a World Religion)

Loneliness, like old age and death, is a taboo subject in our neophilic culture that worships youth and surface at the expense of depth and experience. Brendan Myers, in this thoughtful and eloquent book, travels to the heart of the existential issues that underpin the experience of loneliness. In doing this, he reveals the potential that loneliness holds for each of us to realize our full humanity. Instead of being an experience to avoid at all costs, this book shows how it can act as a gateway that can help us deepen our sense of being alive. --(Philip Carr-Gomm, Author of Sacred Places and A Brief History of Nakedness)

5.0 out of 5 stars Myers shows that philosophy is alive and well 9 Jan 2011
By Holli Emore - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
Ironically, reading a book is something one must do alone. "Loneliness and Revelation" is a gentle, but deceptively courageous, venture into the one fear that most terrifies the majority of humans. Early in the text, Myers writes, "The great task of crafting a good and beautiful life cannot properly begin until we honestly recognize the occasions of solitude in our lives." For those who think of philosophy as the domain of dusty volumes in ancient languages, Myers proves that careful examination of the inner life is just as lively and essential to our time and culture as it was in millenia past. And he does it, I might add, with a graceful writing style that is just as accessible to the novice or non-academic as to the scholarly reader.

5.0 out of 5 stars excellent 25 Nov 2010

This is an excellent book, very thought provoking and well worth the price! It's not a huge book, but also not full of "fluff" to take up pages. Don't let the title fool you. Yes, it is about loneliness, but as a human condition that's normal, and how so much of what we do and say is our way of communicating with the world that "hey I'm here!" I found out about this book from a Pagan blog (the Wild Hunt) but found this book to be relavent to anyone- Pagan, Christian, Agnostic, ect. For me at least, it was one of those books that you read through first- then go back and slowly ponder each chapter.
