This is not one more book of tourism in London. In fact, although written in Spanish it should be of interest for everybody. Yes, it describes the city of London, but it’s first of all the experience of a Spanish woman married with a Welshman. Both live in London for 25 years. There are many things into this book. It’s a description of the differences of conception of life between the societies of Spain and Great Britain in general and especially as for the marriage, family and education of children. Likewise the book has a strong feminist and contracultural content. The authoress possess a degree of education rare in Spanish women from your generation, has been translator, teacher of Spanish and formed part of groups of help for women. I think it’s revealing the fact that a Spanish woman was searching in a great city as London what she could not find in the Spain of decade of 1970’s. In general it seems that her judgment is more favorable to British society, especially Londoner owing to the great multiracial and multicultural component. The critiques to the politics of the conservative party of the years 80 are constant and she makes them responsible for a decrease in the quality and quantity of the social services for the most disadvantaged classes. So this is a polemic book that all readers cannot taste, since the opinions of the authoress are very firm in all these areas, in which she takes always party by progressive attitudes and I think that it will interest more to the women since it extends much on the problems of pregnancy, childbirth, family and the participation of all people in the domestic work.
