Klapper is a good author - I have had his book on Tramways for years. The main interest in this book (published 1976, reprinted 1980) is historic, in seeing what Klapper predicts and comparing it with what history says actually happened, especially with the Broad Street line. In 1976 I was in college; when I had to travel into the centre of London I would usually go to Broad Street from Dalston Junction...then shorn of its buildings bar the signal boxes, rather than Liverpool St from Rectory Road. It was possible to go from Broad St to Richmond on a Crosstown return for an absurdly low amount.
Ah me. in 1986 Broad Street fell and Liverpool St was redeveloped.... Dalston fell into dereliction until being joined into the revamped East London Line connecting north and south.

Yes. A well written and interesting book

As an amateur historian, London's Lost Railways kept me enthralled for days. Tunnels, stations and lines are all covered. The attention to detail is incredible and it contains facts I'd not seen covered elsewhere. A new edition might be in order, with a modern design and layout, but in the interim, I'll refer to it again and again.

This could have been a fascinating book if it was better written. Only the hardiest enthusiast will not get bogged down in the endless data.

Although there a a good number of plates, they are unrelated to the text and there are only 2 maps which are largely unexplained. More maps covering each section of the text might have transformed this book.
