Product Description

Book Description

Whilst many books have been published about the tube railways that were built in London, this is the first time a book has been devoted to the many schemes that failed, including the notable Morgan Tubes. Using extensive original research the history of these schemes is described. Maps and diagrams of the time are reproduced and complimented by many new maps, specially-drawn for this book. Many proposed alternatives and changes to the tube railways that exist today are also explored. Other interesting and related topics are explored in sidebars, and extensive footnotes provide extra information and references.

From the Inside Flap

In the early days of tube railways in London there was little short of a mad scamble to get new tubes authorised for construction. Private and institutional finance was tempted by the promise of moneymaking schemes. Few in the event made very much and some were just plain scams.

This book reveals over forty unfulfilled tubes that were presented to Parliament between 1880 and the start of the First World War, as well as many proposed variations to the tubes that were constructed.

Comprehensive 29 May 2010
Format:Hardcover
This book is expertly researched to the nth degree and this diligence is reflected in the content down to the sizes of the proposed tunnels. I did finish the book but it was a bit heavy at times. That said there are excellent examples of how the eventual routes of lines came about as a result of the failure of other schemes. It is the most comprehensive book of its subject so I imagine it will become the standard reference work.

This book deserves a five for research.

Dense Dense Dense 18 Jun 2007

Ok - anyone who buys this is going to be on the geek scale somewhere and I freely admit that I am but this is a heavy book (both in weight and content) and although I am sure it is expertly researched I had to add it to the pile of unfinished books. Maybe I needed more stories and less fact but....
