5.0 out of 5 stars A Treasure Trove 28 Jun 2014
Format:Paperback
There's so much in this book I don't know where to start. It must surely be the definitive study of the Gainsborough Studio and early British cinema. There are a mass of photos and other illustrative material alongside an informative and very readable text which brings alive those pioneering days. There are the obvious subjects here, notably Alfred Hitchcock, Michael Balcon and Ivor Novello, for example, but a lot of surprises as well, such as the earliest appearances by Laurence Olivier and Godfrey Winn, work by Arnold Ridley (later of Dad's Army fame) and snippets about John Buchan and Colin Clive to name but a few. This book is essential for fans of early British cinema, but even for those who have only a passing interest it's a fascinating read.
