Product Description

From AD61, when Queen Boudicca - outraged at her treatment at the hands of the Romans - marched on to the city and burned it to the gound, London has been hit by wave upon wave of destruction. This fascinating and unique book tells the story of over 2,000 years of disaster from fire, water, disease, pollution, accident, storm, riot, terrorism and enemy action. It chronicles well-known episodes like the Great Plague of 1655 and the Blitz, as well as lesser known events such as whirlwinds and earthquakes. This new editon also includes the terrorist attack of 7 July 2005, as well as a new section on the crises which have plagued the financial City, including the near-collapse of Britain's banks during 2008 and 2009 Londons Disasters ultimately celebrates the spirit of its people who have risen above it all and for whom London is one of the greatest cities on earth in which to live and work.

5.0 out of 5 stars Impeccably researched and gripping from start to finish, 22 Oct 2010
This review is from: London's Disasters: from Boudicca to the Banking Crisis (Paperback)
From the first page I couldn't put it down until I'd finished it. John Withington is a master story teller and really knows how to breathe life and humanity into his exceptionally well researched subject. This is a must for anyone interested in the history of London. Far from being depressing, it shows how resilient Londoners are when faced with catastrophe. London's Disasters is also an excellent reference book that should be on university reading list and library book shelves. On the strength of this book, I have just bought Withington's history of World Disasters and look forward to expanding my global knowledge on a fascinating subject.

3.0 out of 5 stars Disasters?, 7 Nov 2010
This review is from: London's Disasters: from Boudicca to the Banking Crisis (Paperback)
I was a little disappointed with this book. Many of the events described were extremely sketchy and of dubious accuracy. Some were described well but I think the author should have done a little more checking especially when there are available eyewitness reports.
