Product Description

Product Description

There are over 33 bridges spanning the river Thames over the 24 miles between Hampton Court Bridge in the west and Tower Bridge in the East. This is the Royal River - the one on which successive Kings and Queens of England, from Henry VIII onwards, have journeyed to their palaces. Some of today's bridges are the originals; others have been replaced up to four times. In the case of London Bridge there have been as many as 10 incarnations on the site where the current bridge now stands. Ian Pay tells the history, accompanied by Keith Waldergrave's excellent photography.

I also purchased Peter Matthews 'London's Bridges' which I feel gives a more in depth study of the bridges and their history. This book had two things Peter Matthews book could have done with, a map showing the whereabouts of the bridges and the many colour photos that enhance this book. I feel this book is more a coffee table assessory (a good one though) whereas the Peter Matthews book gives you more of a feel for the history of London's Crossings.

This is a fantastic title. It is beautifully produced, well written and crammed with stunning photographs of the 33 Thames crossings between Hampton Court Bridge in the west and Tower Bridge in the east.
There is so much fascinating history too, from the kings and queens who've used the river, to the painters who've made their bridge works famous, to the architects who designed and built them in the first place.
A must have for serious historians and part-time collectors alike. It would also make the perfect present for any Londoner.

Loved the combination of high quality photos and interesting facts about the bridges. Even fully fledged Londoners will learn something new about the city's landmark (and lesser known) bridges.

Would make a great gift too.
