Book Description

10 May 2007
Melanie Phillips' controversial and best-selling book predicted further attacks by British citizens, was published a month and a half before the arrests of 10 August. While public debate is being stifled for various reasons explained in her book - which itself was turned down for three years by publishers in Britain - Londonistan has proved that there is a massive demand from the public who want to understand what is happening to Britain and why a small group of ostensibly well-balanced and well-integrated citizens are turning on their own country. In this fully updated edition with a new chapter, she argues that despite 9/11, despite 7/7, despite 10/8 the British Establishment is still refusing to act and curb the mechanisms, people and influences that spawn extremism.

5.0 out of 5 stars EYE-OPENER 7 Mar 2012
Format:Hardcover
This is a critical book that everyone interested in the fate of the world we live in must read. In this pivotal work Melanie Phillips explains how largely due to the appeasement policies of the liberal and left elites, Britain is becoming in international hub of Islamic terrorism, and how Islamic culture is destroying and pushing out the Judeo-Christian and British tradition in the United Kingdom.

Phillips explains how Britain "still doesn't grasp that it is facing a pincer attack from both terrorism and cultural infiltration and usurpation". Those who call attention to the threat of Islamic cultural takeover and the threat of sustained terrorism are accused of paranoia and Islam by Islamophiles who aim to silence any criticism of Islamism. Due to the fact that establishment of today is run by the post-modern Left that has given up the idea of economic or class equality and has instead focused on enforcing multi-culturalism, political correctness and 'anti-racism', the last of which is basically a code for anti-White racism. When in 2006 Europe was gripped by the furor and violent Islamic rage due to a series of Danish cartoons likening Islam's prophet Mohammed to violence , the former British foreign secretary Jack Straw ignored the violence and instead condemned those newspapers that had published the cartoons. While declaring that free speech must be limited to avoid giving offense or insult to minorities, namely Muslims, the British elite seemed to believe it should be unlimited when it came to Muslims inciting violence.
In February 2006, Muslims demonstrating outside London's upmarket Knightsbridge suburb were allowed to call for bombings and decapitations, while the police benignly looked on.

5.0 out of 5 stars Root Cause 4 July 2007
By Gareth
Format:Hardcover
Every terrorist atrocity is followed by the question "Why?". All too often, the answers provided by politicians and pundits are simply figments of their own imagination. A campaigner against poverty will claim that poverty causes terrorism; a fan of national self-determination will claim that the terrorists are "freedom fighters". In this book, Melanie Philips delves into the ideology of islamism (or islamo-fascism) and explores the total failure of the British chattering class to understand or resist the march of this ideology within Britain. Others, such as Craig Wynn and Robert Spencer, have explored islam more deeply, and former islamist Ed Hussain has provided an insider's guide to the process of islamist agit-prop in britain. However, Melanie's book must rank as by far the best guide to the mind-blowing passivity of the British State which has allowed London to become a hotbed of islamo-fascism and terrorist activity.

By M. McManus VINE™ VOICE
Format:Paperback
This book describes how a mixture of government policies by successive Tory and Labour governments created a large and fierce fifth column of radical Muslim inside the UK's borders. The book points the finger of blame at four things. Firstly, is the human rights industry, which under the excuse of protecting human rights has enabled even very reasonable security and deportation measures to be struck down as alleged "human rights violations". Secondly, is the doctrine of multiculturalism, which forbids a frank discussion of the compatibility of Islam and liberal democracy as well as certain cultural practises like honour killings. Thirdly, is the collapse in Western cultural confidence engineered by the far left PC "elites", which makes radical Muslims view the UK as weak, decadent and deserving of conquest. Finally, is the way Israel is being viewed as a sacrificial lamb to appease radical Islam.

Phillips also show cases the peculiar alliance between the far left and radical Islam, exemplified by Ken Livingstone and George Galloway. she says that this alliance has led to two things, a growth in anti-Semitism and a vicious anti-Israel climate in the media and academia. She writes a spirited and extremely frank defence of Israel, and dispels a few myths in the process.

The book does not have any obvious weaknesses. Some readers may disagree with here views on Israel, even if they agree about the threat poses by radical Islam and the problems associated with multiculturalism. All in all, the book is a must read for anyone concerned about radical Islam and curious as to why our political elites fail to deal with it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Essential Reading for UK, US, and Western World 31 May 2006
Format:Hardcover
Melanie Phillips describes the historical factors that have led to the cultural and political tolerance of radical Islamism in the United Kingdom and the impact on both the security of UK and the world. It describes the sad state of UK's immigration policies that have led to an influx of radical Islamism in the UK, as well as the cultural tolerance to such views, even after 9/11.

Moreover, the author points out that the 7/7 attacks had very limited impact as a "wake up call" for Britons on this issue, and that many still view the US and Israel as the source of the radical Islamism problem - and refuse to attribute responsibility to radical Islamism itself.

As a second generation American whose family is from UK, I find this a disturbing and quite sad book, as I don't get a sense that there is much hope that things will change in UK in the near future. But it is important that both Britons and Americans read this eye-opening book - perhaps the education on the state of UK will help influence future change.

This book is the "Why England Slept" book of our era - and Melanie Phillips has a vital message that is essential reading for all those who care about UK, US, and the western world.
