I while ago, I downloaded this from the Take The Pills website...not because I'm a thief, but, because if anything happened to the vinyl copy I bought when it came out originally, I would be devastated...

This is an EXCELLENT indiepop album - up there with the best!!! Originally released on Sarah records (The Field Mice, The Orchids, The Sweetest Ache, Brighter) - if you're a Belle & Sebastian fan/an indiepop fan/someone who is into guitar indie that thinks it's been commercialised you need (that's NEED!!!! to check out Sarah records - Google it...), this has been sorely needing a re-issue for a long time...

This is angst, but, not in the usual hollywood-cliched sense...Harvey Williams (AKA Another Sunny Day) wears his heart - and in some cases, his rejection - on his sleeve for all to hear...

I could write at length about each track...bur, that would make for a LOOONG post...

A couple of highlights for me :
"I'm in love with a girl who doesn't know I exist" - a bittersweet happy/sad acoustic indie song that hits me every time...I wish I could play it to a girl on the X13 bus that I've got a crush on (she has headphones in permanantlly - I can be a bit shy at times, but, how do you get talking when... - I just wish I could somehow play her this song...)

"What happened.." - more bittersweet...about a friend that has seemigly sold out...

"The very beginning" - a paen to a relationship in crisis...

For any indiepop fan, for any fan of honest to the bone songs of relationships, won, lost, hoping for...

For anyone that has a secret crush on soneone...

For anyone in unrequited love...

This CD is a MUST!!!!

Harvey Williams IS Another Sunny Day. This was the name he traded under for a string of adorably jangly and bittersweet 7" single releases for the seminal Bristol label Sarah Records. At one stage he was also involved with not one but TWO other - equally seminal - bands: Saint Etienne (he played bass in one of their first ever line-ups, long before Sarah Cracknell joined up) and kindred spirits The Field Mice (being with them right up until the latter's sad and messy demise on stage in 1991).

His achievements with The Field Mice of course are the stuff of legend, but with his own parallel incarnation the ghost of C-86 and Anorak/Cutie janglepop looms large throughout everything he did between 1989 and 1992.... whilst erstwhile mid-80s influences such as The Smiths ('You Should All Be Murdered'), The Housemartins ('What's Happened To You?'), and The Wedding Present (practically every song - chiefly in the lovelorn lyrics) are also written through much of the music like letters in a stick of seaside rock.

Only five 7" singles were released on Sarah - that's an even smaller body of work than the comparatively prolific Field Mice - but each 2 or 3-track 45rpm was an understated nugget: a melodic vignette of unrequited love, yearning, longing, unfulfilled dreams, dashed hopes and angst - married to a none-more-lo-fi production: just one boy and his guitar, a cheap drum machine and a bit of keyboard dusting, and bob's yer uncle.

The compilation opens with the long-deleted 'Anorak City' (with its intentionally ironic title!) which was issued on a flexidisc.... Harvey uses this as an opportunity to extol the virtues of being a shameless mid-80s jangle-pop fanatic - What's great about 'Anorak' pop is that you can get away with singing ever so slightly out of tune.... Harvey even demonstrates this perfectly on this song (listen to the way he sings "...you can be my anorak baby" and giggle at how his pitch goes astray on 'baby'...) The track canters along at a frantically euphoric pace which perfectly befits the celebratory nature of this ode to growing a floppy fringe, wearing badges and thrift-shop threads, collecting fanzines and, of course, seeking out that elusive pretty girl: a theme which is simply omnipresent throughout every single song on this compilation.

Some would say Harvey is practically obsessed with this preoccupation so much so that he constantly seesaws between hopeful elation and wrist-slitting despair. For example, the entire lyric of 'I'm In Love With A Girl Who Doesn't Know I Exist' tells you all you need to know about this fellow's frame of mind. Seldom has such a deceptively simple song concealed such a seething mass of conflicting emotions. Be eternally grateful then, that the tunes he delivers here are so utterly irresistible and adorable and that he emphatically didn't go the other way and resorted to doing what all the misguided raven-haired, flappy-panted and wallet-chained kids do when their milk gets spilt and fly into an incoherent, teeth-grinding, crockery-smashing rage and call it Emo.

The killer song though, has to be 'You Should All Be Murdered' - where it appears Harvey's OD'd on too much Smiths, as it sounds just like the best song that Mozza and Marr never wrote....right down to the Steven Patrick vocal stylings. A wonderfully bitter and bilious tirade on what sort of folks he would love to see dispensed with in this cruel and uncaring world, over a fantastically spritely jangle which climaxes in a full-on guitar/keyboard coda that again recalls the Field Mice. Magnificent. Again, Emo kids should listen and take note: you wanna be angry, then by all means be angry - but do so deploying a bloody great TUNE as your weapon of intent - like here!

Harvey even hit his own towering peak of sorts with the stupendous tale of heartbreak that was the 'Rio' single. No, it's not a Duran Duran cover (thank god, although it would have been very funny if it was - god only knows what he could have done by way of a reinterpretation). Against a truly glistening, crystalline production - the same sound heard on the Field Mice's sublime 'So Said Kay' EP - tellingly issued around the same time and which also features Harvey - this orchestrated sobfest will, I promise you, have you with a lump in your throat by the time the doleful harmonica-led outro reaches its forlorn, windswept conclusion, by which point the male protagonist is probably perched precariously over the sea cliffs wondering which way to turn next as the gulls circle high above and the waves crash solemnly far below him. As for its flip 'The Very Beginning' which follows - it's the kind of song that a part of you secretly wishes for it to not end.... ever.

There are a few extras on this collection - notably some demos and unreleased tracks, but the strangest oddity here by far is the peculiar cover of OMD's 1983 hit 'Genetic Engineering' - an utterly bizarre rendition which sounds as if Harvey is playing OVER THE TOP of the original, possessed as it is of a very muddy swampy production - almost as if in an attempt to disguise this fact. He screeches his way through the song without so much as a care in the world....

Harvey subsequently recorded under his own name, issuing a couple of EPs ('Rebellion' and 'California') on the new Sarah [re]incarnation Shinkansen before practically vanishing off the face of the earth as no more was heard from him for years. This compilation though, is essential. Just as you must get yourself re-acquainted with all of the remastered Field Mice albums which include all the singles, you should buy this neat little 20-track anthology and cherish it. It's the very least Harvey deserves after all of the heartbreak and unrequited love he has suffered......in song anyway.

Back in the day when indie pop really was indie, and pop meant more hooks than a fisherman's hat, Another Sunny Day were signed to the legendary, and wonderfully twee, Sarah Records. The brainchild of Harvey Williams, Another Sunny Day were a perfect example of the heart-on-sleeve, lovelorn, jangly pop groups that thrived in the `80s. Williams' songs were bittersweet paeans to all the girlfriends he never had and all the relationships that somehow never materialised - Morrissey wrote the book and a host of admirers added their own chapters.

Titles like 'I'm In Love With A Girl Who Doesn't Even Know That I Exist' and 'I Don't Suppose I'll Get A Second Chance' are self-explanatory; `The Very Beginning' a dissection of a crumbling relationship. If you're keen on bands like Belle & Sebastian then Another Sunny Day should certainly be investigated without delay, as should most of the Sarah Records catalogue. 7/10.
