4.0 out of 5 stars A good read 13 Feb 2009
Format:Paperback
Well I guess it depends how much you know already.
This book has many facets. Some chapters are almost walks step by step, and some are sort of background stories. The effect it had on me was to make me want to explore these places on my own. Which is strange, I guess, because then I wouldn't take the paid walk! But then some of the really interesting chapters make me want to meet the guides and will help me to put what they say into some context - after all my memory is not that good and I wouldn't retain every detail from the book. So .. hmmm . . I think overall it's a great success because it makes me more INTERESTED in things I didn't know before and wouldn't have thought of finding out.
Thank you Mr Tucker - oh and your prose is the tiramisu of tour guides!

3.0 out of 5 stars hard to see 4 Mar 2009
Format:Paperback
I had high hopes for this book, but felt a bit disappointed. descriptions of establishments are colorful, but without any sort of map, it is extremely difficult to walk these routes.
Also, the print size seems a lot smaller than normal- very difficult to read on the go.

I think I will go on one of the walks, and enjoy the views!

5.0 out of 5 stars The story of london 5 Jun 2013

Absolutely fascinating - all the fact and hidden treasures that I bet very few people who live in London have ever heard of. A really good read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Things you never new about London 24 April 2011
Format:Paperback
For anyone interested in the History of London this a brilliant book. Each chapter is written by a blue badge guide, and they tell you of places of interest that you would normally walk bye and not know they were there.

4.0 out of 5 stars The stories behind the places...... 21 May 2009
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
I have long been an admirer of London Walks - they are THE guided walks company to go with in London. Their guides are funny, informative - and sometimes even cute! This book is a compilation of 'essays' by some of those guides giving the background stories to famous, and also little known, areas of London. There is a bit of history, a bit of 'gossip' (very old gossip in most cases) - and a lot of knowledge. Even if you never take a London Walk (but you should) this book would be a useful read before any trip to London. The only reason I haven't given it 5 stars is that I haven't read it all yet - so I'm still finding out just how good it is!

5.0 out of 5 stars Outstanding! 13 Feb 2009
Format:Paperback
Bought this on Tuesday and can't put it down! Not just a boring take-thirty-steps-east-and-stop-and-look-up type of walking guidebook, this goes much more in-depth. It even gives recommendations for great locations in which to read this book - quiet, hidden nooks and crannies off the beaten track. Loving the Old Palace Quarter chapter particularly. If you love London you'll love this book!

5.0 out of 5 stars London: Best City in the World 13 Feb 2009
Format:Paperback
The best city in the world has the best walking tour company and now they've written a book. These guys love London and it shows. Each chapter deals with a different district or area and each writer (they're all guides) brings a different "voice" to the table. Donald Rumbelow's Jack the Ripper chapter is as good as we have come to expect from that writer (see also his Complete Jack the Ripper book) and the chapter on the River Thames is a tour-de-force. Got it the first day it came out (they've been advertising it for ages) and I was NOT disappointed. Well worth the wait.

5.0 out of 5 stars Worth the wait! 14 Feb 2009
Format:Paperback
Waited for AGES for this book - they've been advertising it on the London Walks Website and on their Blog and the London Walks leaflet for what seems like months now. It's the perfect compliment to the London Walks walking tours in that you can either read the book and then go on the walks or go on the walks then go back to the book and use it like DVD extras. The Fleet Street chapter, about all the old newspapers, and the Old Soho chapter are best. Well worth the long wait (but I'm biased because I've been a London Walks fan for years!). Georgia Jones
