5.0 out of 5 stars A guide to your own walking adventures (that fits in your pocket), 16 Nov 2011
By
Riverman1965 "matrb" (London, United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
This review is from: London Walking: A Handbook for Survival (Batsford Architecture) (Paperback)
At the end of the 90s I began a personal walking and drawing project and had the mainstays of 'Lights Out For the Territory' by Iain Sinclair and 'Wonderful London' by Arthur St. John Adcock to bolster me (along with lots of history and research notes from various libraries) as I set off around the streets of North and South London with my sketchbook. At the time there were not many books about London for the serious (or even silly) walker. So when I first saw this small volume a few years later it occurred to me (alas, too late for my own tramping) that you don't need to do lots of research, just have an intuitive guide (like Simon Pope), an open mind and lots of energy.

As I've got to know more walkers I've discovered that there is a wealth of material from the first part of the 20th century out there, from a time when walking was still an orthodox pastime. Simon Pope's book looks back to this period but more than anything it is a contemporary tool kit for people to have their own urban walking adventures. It's peppered with a post-modern jokiness that can be used as armour plating if you require such defence or justification for your wanderings. It's also got some fantastic John Lennonesque scratchy illustrations by Claudia Schenk.

And, unlike nearly every other London walking guide you'll encounter, it really does fit in your pocket.

This was a very funny and witty little book. It was a lot of fun reading the different ideas. For those people with a good sense of humor, you would enjoy this book.
