Book Description

5 May 2011

Discover which prehistoric mammals would once have lived by the River Thames. Take a detailed look at the crystal palace of the Great Exhibition and an early map of the underground. See the locations of medieval plague pits, Tudor inns, eighteenth-century hangings and gangland crime hotspots.

London: An Illustrated History offers a new perspective on one of the world's most exciting cities, from Iron Age cemeteries to Victorian sewers, Viking raids to Zeppelin air raids, Roman temples to Jewish ghettos, Georgian brothels to the Great Fire, Roman arenas to the Olympics.

Images, objects and expert text from the Museum of London, together with maps old and new, contemporary cartoons and paintings, startling artefacts and vivid reconstructions of ancient buildings, shine a fresh light on all aspects of the city's constantly changing story. Invasions, epidemics, riots, pubs, shrines, crime, gentrification, immigrant communities, urban development and art are all here. Special 'Survivals' sections even show where remains of buildings from London's past can still be seen today.

The daily lives of Londoners and the city's chequered history come alive in this book as never before.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent book 7 July 2012
By Chris S
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
This item was bought for a gift for a friend. It is a beautiful journal, it makes a great refernece book for all ages with excellent clear illustrations. This book is detailed enough for a historian but well written enough to interest the man in the street. A really nice book that can be read cover to cover (would take some time), but also can be dipped into as required for reference. Lots of infomation and so good value for money.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant detail - stunning book. 14 Dec 2011
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
This book is a superb trip through London over the centuries. It can be read as a book, or it can be 'dipped into' if you want to learn about a particular era. It covers the development of London from when it was a simple settlement right up to the building of the Gherkin and London today. Stunning pictures accompany your 'journey'.

I bought this for my 81 year old father who was born in London but left in his late 20s and he absolutely loves it! Easy to dip into with lots of fascinating insights and beautiful pictures. Could easily be enjoyed by a young teenager up to an elderly OAP!

I found the way this book is laid out really good, as it allows you to dip in and out of subjects with ease. As I am researching my family tree it's been a help to getting a bigger picture as to what was going on and where at the time they lived there.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fascinating 1 Jun 2014
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
This book is really fascinating.
It is a big book, but it is broken into short sections, so one can read about the bits that interest you most and then go back to other bits another day.
I really enjoyed the more recent history such as the advent of gas & then electric street lighting.
Quite a number of my ancestors were from London and it was interesting to find out what life would have been like for them in the capital.
The illustrations are good too and the book would make a useful reference book for younger history students.
