Product Description

David Kynaston, TLS
"Ranald Michie's massive history of the Stock Exchange is undeniably a formidable achievement, going far beyond previous accounts. It is the product of not only heroic research ... but also a sure grasp of how securities markets work ... His book, in short, transforms our understanding of a key national institution." --This text refers to the Hardcover edition.

Review
Michie offers a richly detailed and well-documented narrative, written in cogent prose and intermittently enlivened with understated wit ... Michie's impressive book now sets the standard. Anyone with an interest in English financial development or corporate history will find his book to be of value. (Financial History Review )

4.0 out of 5 stars The ultimate history of an exchange that will die soon, 21 Jan 2002
By A Customer
This book offers a unique insight into the London Stock Exchange. Anyone who wishes to understand the current structures and regulation of this centrepiece of the City, has to read it. Unlike any other work in this area, the reader can enjoy the details of market regulation from its very beginnings to the recent state, put into the wider context of the poilitical and economic development of those times.

However, there are two drawbacks with this book. Firstly, it is very academicly written and requires a deeper understanding of the operation of financial markets in general. Although personal statements of market participants of those times shows very well the mood of the time, the very details of changes can be exhausting for the non-specialist reader. But this also makes the book a unique ressource for anyone looking for the origins of certain customs.

Secondly, while the time until the Big Bang (1986) is described very much in detail and with great insight, the quality dramatically drops when analyzing the Big Bang itself. Here Augar, The Death of the Gentlemanly Capitalism shows the developments much more vivid. Maybe it is still too early to have a wider view of this event and its implications.

Despite these shortcomings, a book that any City Banker and student interested in financial markets should have read. With the LSE under ever more pressure to merge with other markets and likely to vanish in its present form, this book could be the last one written on the existing institution...
