Book Description

8 Feb 2011
Richard Bryant's London is a fitting love letter to a city with an unparalleled history and an inimitable and tangible soul.

Following the path of the river, the reader travels across London, from the bucolic West to the postmodern East from the beautiful villas and gardens of Notting Hill through Bedford Square and Georgian London to Roman ruins, the historic monuments of Greenwich, and the new city rising in the docklands. Richard Bryant s spectacular photographs capture every aspect of London, from the distinctive beauty of the Royal parks to the formal splendor of Whitehall, and from the London Eye and the Houses of Parliament to charming Fenchurch and streetscapes unchanged for centuries. In the tradition of New York New York, Los Angeles, and Atlantic, this deluxe volume showcases breathtaking panoramic photographs including ten stunning gatefolds that open to present six feet of cityscape.

With an introduction by Peter Ackroyd, the most distinctive and authoritative biographer of the city to date, London is a unique and definitive tribute to one of the most amazing cities in the world.

Review

Bryant's images are formally composed, the human form rarely straying into the frame. Yet, with its juxtapositions of old and new, stately and informal, the vivid and cumulative portrait that it provides is still of a living, perpetually evolving city. --The Independent on Sunday

Format:Hardcover
The photos are so vivid and realistic, you could be in them. Particularly impressive is the pull-out of a tube station platform.

5.0 out of 5 stars Simply stunning 14 Mar 2009
By W. Gant
Format:Hardcover
This huge coffee table book is one that will have you looking through the pages again and again. And the fact that the photography tends to focus only on the architecture and places rather than people means that this book has a timeless quality to it.

I appreciate how there are no words or descriptions getting in the way of the beautiful photos - it leaves you speculating over what you are looking at as you turn the pages. And fortunately at the end, every photo is described and there is even a useful map that points to where the photos were taken.

I believe there are only 5000 of this grand book in print, so it is sure to become a collector's item. This signed, limited edition also comes with a print which is worthy of framing.

5.0 out of 5 stars Pictures 29 Dec 2011
By algy
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
A present for my wife whose first contact in UK was as an au pair in London where she used to walk a lot on her time off. Though her English is good my wife enjoys panoramic and aerial views of the streets and areas she knew just over 40 years ago.
I had thought to buy pictures for the house but I could not make up my mind. Then I chanced on this picture book and another: problem solved. The book has an index of locations but no commentaries geographical or historical. My wife's memories are commentary enough with such high quality photographs.

5.0 out of 5 stars London in pictures 6 Aug 2010
Format:Hardcover
The photographs in this book are absolutely beautiful. There is a written introduction at the beginning of the book but no individual descriptions of the photographs. Instead at the end of the book is a map of the Thames with the location and identity of each photograph. I bought this book as a present and will soon buy one for myself too.

5.0 out of 5 stars Exquisite and complex book 27 Feb 2009
Format:Hardcover
Richard Bryant's photographs show London as a complex city. The quality of light and detail is astonishing and it is a book that can be revisited many times, as there is always something more to discover in its pages. The depth and scope of the project is really impressive, as is the photographer's range and insight into the panoramas and details of London.

5.0 out of 5 stars London De Luxe Indeed 28 Oct 2008
Format:Hardcover
This huge book needs a substantial coffee table to support it. The size allows these wonderful photographs to be seen in their full glory. A truly stunning achievement, which covers all aspects of this great city from the spectacular public buildings to back street "greasy spoons". Fantastic.

Got this as a gift and as a life long resident of London I don't see this as a good photo book of London at all. I've taken better pictorials myself and I don't claim to be a pro. Read more
