Book Description

10 July 2011 Old House
Map of Victorian London (East) coloured street by street to show the lifestyle of the inhabitants from the wealthy upper classes to the vicious and semi-criminal lowest class. A century after the start of the Industrial Revolution the Victorians finally began to turn their attention to matters of social conscience. The remarkable achievements of the entrepreneurs who had prospered as they developed new factories, railways and docks overshadowed a deprivation among the working classes that had hitherto been unseen in Britain. Certainly there had been destitution and hardship in the rural communities but as people sought work in the new industrial heartlands they encountered appalling disease, poorly constructed housing and little sanitation. Nonetheless high rents still had to be paid, invariably to unscrupulous landlords. There was little concern for the long working hours or child labour, and unguarded machinery and uncaring overseers caused serious accidents after which casualties were given little or no assistance other than the prospect of ending their days in the workhouse. Wealthy ship owner Charles Booth was appalled by conditions in London's docklands and vowed to do something about it. Realising that the situation needed to be accurately assessed he published numerous surveys that reported on the living conditions, lifestyle and income of Londoners. These two maps (East and West available as separate maps) classify London streets into seven categories from the very poor lowest class mainly in the east end (but with some surprising enclaves in the fashionable west) right up to the wealthy upper classes in Marylebone and Mayfair. A fascinating resource for genealogists and all lovers of London's past

4.0 out of 5 stars A useful family history resource 15 July 2012

I used Booth's map in conunction with looking at Google UK map on my PC to pinpont the area I was trying to find and it was effective. Even if the area has changed through bombing and post war slum clearance, I was pretty sure that I had the correct location. The similarity of the same, but slightly altered street names, and that they were in the right district, confirmed it. If someone wanted to make an alphabetical list of the roads, with a map grid, of Booth's map, I would have paid extra to have it, as it takes patience to work through the original. However, using Google Maps UK with the Booth's map is a good method of locating the area anyone was trying to find. Most of them were still in existence. I'm so pleased that Amazon are selling this resource as it has been such a help at working out the fortunes (and otherwise!) of my ancestors.

2.0 out of 5 stars Good try 18 Oct 2012

Doing ancestry research I bought this map out of curiosity. It's a large map, but the lack of indexing of streets make it pretty tedious as a tool. Print quality is naff and what street names I see are so small and feint. Good try Mr Booth, but let down by your printer.

Relevant to my enquiries and fully met my expectations. Quality, delivery and price excellent. Unable to afford original Bradshaw's Guide but this facsimile was totally acceptable. Poverty Map and Bradshaw's Guides were introduced to me following TV programmes.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great maps 18 July 2012
Fab maps, I am looking into my family history and hope these will help me build up a picture of my family.
Nothing negative to say, but you will need to invest in a good magnifying glass.
