Product Description

Product Description

London is a city that continually changes to suit the age; an ever changing backdrop to what has survived from over the centuries. We are always conscious of the show-piece buildings, but London can never quite shake off the smaller details, the disregarded curiosities that connect us to a past that never goes away. London Peculiars goes in search of the strange, the unexpected and the downright odd: dinosaurs in Sydenham, stage-set housefronts in Bayswater, a funeral railway in Waterloo. Architecture that moves considerable distances, architecture that hides other purposes. The weird, the mysterious, the preposterous; this book is a manual for anyone wanting to scratch away at London's surface gloss, for everyone who looks beyond the immediate and obvious. Through a succession of atmospheric photographs and text, this fascinating book will send the reader on an enchanting journey of discovery through London's alternative histories.

I like this book. It has a few failings but overall its interesting and a great book to take with you if you want to spend a few hours or so walking around London and seeing more then the normal sites.

I have wanted to see Postmans Park since I saw it in the film Closer. However, though I had heard talk about it, mostly on Robert Elms radio show on BBC London, I had never known where it was or known more then a little about it. This book put me right and it was a joy to follow.

I am now planning frequent visits up to London just to see some of the oddities he has highlighted in this volume. The only down side is that some of the facts are inaccurate, though that doesn't take anything away from the idea of the book. For an example in Postman's Park, the author says that the plaques to those who sacrificed their lives for others were discontinued after the death of the Victorian artist G F Watts death in 1904. However, there is at least one reference to an air raid in the first world war in 1917/18.

A good read and a worthy reference. I am looking forward to reading the second volume!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Open your eyes to a hidden London, 30 Sep 2005
This review is from: London Peculiars: Curiosities in a Capital City (Paperback)
I picked this up whilst browsing on London architecture after passing Parliament Square each day on the bus and wanting to find out more about London buildings. This little gem of a book picks some of the oddities to be found in London streets - no doubt you pass by at least one of them frequently. It goes from statues to bollards, bear-baiting to railways and show what an intriguing history our city really has. Look out for the taxi light at the Houses of Parliament.....
