Product Description

Product Description

Judges Postcards have been celebrating the British landscape for over a hundred years. In the nature of their business, photographers have been despatched at intervals in that time to update images and to record changes in major destinations and quiet corners of the realm. The need for current images inevitably created a growing archive chronicling the times before change occurred. That archive has now become a unique and priceless record of a century of such change and this book draws on it to present a superb selection of images of London's past. The sheer quality of Judges' photography combines with the author's informative and entertaining commentary to create an essential addition to the bookshelf, an ideal gift and a surprisingly comprehensive introduction to the county.

2.0 out of 5 stars Too much is very familiar, 28 Aug 2011

This review is from: London in Old Photographs: From the Judges Postcard Archive Collection (In Old Photographs) (Paperback)
I love London's history and books of old photos so this seemed ideal for me but I was quite disappointed. I do understand this was taken from a collection of commercial postcards and therefore mainstream views are to be expected. However, I felt there was far too much in here that was familiar either because I had seen very similar photos before or because the view in the postcard is not so very different to the one you see today. To the credit of the publisher they have included a Search inside facility, so have a look - the first picture is of the Crystal Palace - picture-worthy? Yes. Is this a good picture of it? Yes. Is it different to tens of other pictures? No. The next picture on Search Inside is of Marble Arch, looking pretty much like Marble Arch but with less traffic and a slightly different backdrop of buildings.
If you haven't seen a lot of old photos of London you would enjoy this book, I think but if you've seen a couple of books already then I recommend looking elsewhere, such as the work of excellent Brian Girling.
