Product Description

Product Description

The London LOOP (London Outer Orbital Path) is the newly created network of footpaths around the periphery of the capital. It is the result of 10 years' work by the London Walking Forum to devise a route encompassing some of the glorious countryside that lies within easy reach of the heart of London. This new Recreational Path Guide divides the London LOOP into 15 convenient sections, illustrated throughout with full-color photographs and maps, specially prepared by the Ordnance Survey. The sections represent day walks of reasonable length, each starting and finishing at a public transport point; the author also suggests points at which the walks can be broken down into shorter sections by getting back on a train or bus. Key sites along the route are numbered in the text and on the maps for easy identification.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another excellent guide book from David Sharp, 8 May 2001

This review is from: The London Loop (Recreational Path Guides) (Paperback)
Having used David Sharp's previous guide book on the Thames Path, I was expecting an entertaining and informative book on the London Loop.

The book lived up to all expectations. It is even more invaluable for the London Loop, as the path is not completely signposted in every area yet. If you are going to walk the London Loop, you need this guide!

Also included are a number of interesting facts about places and landmarks that you come across on your journey. Despite living in London all of my life, there were many things that I was not aware of. Fascinating stuff.

2.0 out of 5 stars How far do I go?, 13 Jun 2011
We have now completed half the loop with help/hindrance of this book. I wouldn't say that it's totally useless as I don't we could have come this far without it. However, we completed the Capital Ring last month and used the guide book from the same series which we found almost foolproof but I'm afraid this book just does not cut it in the same way. Mr Sharp's writing style is irritating and essential parts of the direction are cut up with inane comments and waffly bits of local information and history. These may be all very well but they upset the clarity of the instructions with the way the text is edited. More importantly, Mr Sharp seems to have no concept of time and space. Therefore, you are never sure whether the next landmark is one metre or one mile away which can be very frustrating. We have often taken turns at the wrong time or left paths too early or had to double back to check that we haven't missed something. What's wrong with saying "after around 500 yards turn right", rather than the non-specific "after a while turn right". This change would turn a frustrating guide into a real help and we would be able to relax and enjoy the walks a lot more.

4.0 out of 5 stars The London Loop (Revised 2010), 14 Nov 2011
This is a most useful book, with a wealth of interesting walks. It is NOT worth attempting a walk in the reverse order, ie from the 'Finish' point back to the 'Start', as some of the waypoints are really only visible (or make sense) in the Start -> Finish direction, as written.
I am very happy reading OS maps in the country, but WHAT a pity that the 'specially annotated' Ordinance Survey Map extracts that are printed in the Book do NOT show actual road names, only a very occasional Road Number! Great to have the actual footpaths shown on Open Land and Public Commons, but SO easy to get lost in a strange town where virtually all the roads shown are un-identified: this is a MAJOR flaw. Be sure to take an A-Z Guide, or a GPS as well, and you will find this to be the ideal solution to the "precisely where ARE we?" query that keeps coming again and again.
