Out of Miami and LA Ink, London Ink has been my most favourite for not only featuring my favourite artists (Nikole Lowe, Dan Gold, Phil Kyle as well as guest artist Bob Tyrrell) in a studio a little closer to home (the UK compared to the U.S) but also for it's more realistic insight into the life of a tattoo artist and the studio, rather than a `reality-show' stuffed of faux drama just for pure entertainment.
I think what London Ink lacks in comparison to the Miami & LA Ink shows is the drama that some viewers loved. Instead of getting in-depth and very personal with the tattoo artists, the clients and their reasons for getting tattoos, London Ink tends to focus more on the busy atmosphere of your average tattoo studio in London and the hardships Louis Molloy and his crew face with opening a new studio and designing the best tattoos for their clients. There's particular emphasis in some episodes of Louis trying his best to help out his fellow tattoo artist Dan Gold, but the show also offers a little more personal insight into the life of the artists. (Dan and his struggles in the past, Dan & his son Yan, Phil and his daughter Willow, etc.)
What I love about London Ink is that it tends to be more realistic, more toned-down and less staged and rehearsed than the other shows. You see very few walk-ins in London or artists doing 5 minute tattoo jobs. Only in London Ink will you see emphasis on the fact that getting a tattoo actually HURTS, and you will see some clients struggle with the pain and give their verdict after. In Miami and LA Ink, it seems the clients are always comfortable and relaxed... chatting away with the tattoo artist as they get their work done, plus the shows can be cut and edited so drastically that it sometimes gives the impression a full sleeve of tattoo work can be done in less than 8 hours!
I think I prefer London Ink the most because I'm a lover of tattoos and would love to become a tattoo artist, so a show that focuses more on the actual tattoo work and artists, rather than one that focuses on the drama (and the supposedly glamorous, party-hard life of the tattoo artists there) interests me more. Still, for the time it ran I felt London Ink offered insight into the more realistic side of the life of a tattoo artist. I would strongly recommend anyone interested in Miami & LA Ink to also look into London Ink rather than disregard it - it's style may be different but you might just prefer it more, as I did.
I would give London Ink 4 stars because although I loved the series, the studio and the artists that worked there, I was disappointed with the number of episodes (only 6) and how short the series was. (only 2 - 12 episodes altogether!) But who knows, we'll probably see that crazy Dan again on the screen soon. ;)
