Book Description

6 Nov 2008

The Romans founded Londinium in AD50 but the earliest human remains in the Thames valley, once the realm of mammoths and polar bears, date back to 450,000BC. Following through the impacts of invasions, revolts and epidemics ranging from the Black Death to cholera, this book shows how, against all the odds, a small malarial settlement turned into Europe’s most successful city.

Full of evidence gathered from the Museum of London’s extensive archaeological work and written in thematic chapters that explore the changing aspects of life over the last three thousand years and across a variety of maps old and new, London shines a fascinating light on everything from costermongers to the Krays, the building of the Embankment to the destruction of the Blitz.

There are contemporary cartoons and paintings, artefacts that range from the Mayor’s golden coach to a leather Roman bikini found in the mud of the Thames and the museum’s own vivid reconstructions of ancient markets, temples and bathhouses, making the daily lives of Londoners and the city’s chequered history come alive in this book as never before.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fascinating History of a Great City 27 Aug 2010
Format:Hardcover
This a lavishly illustrated "coffee table" book showing the history of London from the time of the Romans until sometime last week. The book was written by two of the curators of the Museum of London and its easy to see they know what they're about.

Each epoch is covered by a chapter which starts with the contemporary footprint of London superimposed in a base map common to all the chapters. It is easy to see the growth of Roman "Lundinium", its abandonment for the settlement of Lundenwic just upstream, and the repopulation of the old Roman walled city during the 10th century. Each chapter covers the main industries, the size of the population and their daily lives as well as architecture and surviving examples. I spent about 6 hours methodically poring over the illustrations. It was absolutely enthralling.

4.0 out of 5 stars London: The Illustrated History 3 Aug 2009
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
One of a number of map based London histories this is the most recent and one of the best. The authors are based at the Museum of London and so its sourcing is reliable, its themes include the historic and the contemporary and like all such map based books it is highly selective. The cost reflects its high production values.
